Not sure that a proxy would help you, either your link speed is low to the WiFi or the hotel's internet connection speed is the limiter. You will not be able to bypass the speed/restriction of the transport layer you have to the Internet even if you were proxying. If you have 3G phone though and you can tether it to that you may get more luck (but at a price).
I was in a hotel recently that was offering 64kbps for free, wow. 512kbps was the fastest paid speed they were offering...
