Archos 9
ok...so did some searching and I can only find two comments on this unit which are kind of hidden within the larger iPad discussion
I've been looking closely at the Archos 9 tablet vs. the iPad. I've had a chance to play with the iPad a friend of mine has and I like it. However, in addition to wanting the unit to watch movies, tv shows, maybe as an e-reader, etc while travelling - I also need to justify this with some productivity while in the field.
Specifically I need to have access to word & excel docs that I can edit while doing site inspections. My laptop is not practical for this and my current system of printing docs out, making notes and then re-typing after the fact is just not effecient.
I cannot see an easy / user-friendly way to edit word/excel docs on the iPad but it would appear this should be relatively easy with the archos 9 since it runs windows and I should be able to load office onto it.
However - would like feedback from anyone who has the archos 9 on their impressions. Is it durable? Does it work like it says it does? Easy to use? etc.
I cannot find a retail location for the archos 9 in Canada (non e-commerce site) so I haven't had a chance to use or see a unit yet but I am going to NY next week and could pick one up at J&R while there.
thanks,
j.
If only Archos were not such a piss poor company at providing support. Every one of their past products had some kind of flaw, but by the time people would be ready to storm their offices, they'd simply move on to the next device.
The hardware on devices like the 605 is brilliant - but their insane plug-in strategy and horrible UI make the entire thing pretty much useless.

They reviewed the Archos & Ipad and a small Laptop (not netbook) on the Gadget show here in the UK and weren't very nice about the Archos putting it at the bottom of the three with the just laptop above it. YMMV although I have yet to read a good review of the Archos, it had real problems with HD video when tested on the gadget show.
And Reghardware is usually a good reviewer so here is the Archos 9 and the iPad as reviewed by a normal person .
