Stross’s primary source is Paul Carter, the president of Global Wireless Solutions, a network testing firm. Carter acknowledges that AT&T is one of his company’s clients, and Verizon is not. I mean, come on.
...
Consumer Reports’s rankings, which put AT&T last and Verizon first, were based on actual customer surveys. Actual customers reporting their actual experiences.

If it’s the iPhone’s fault, not AT&T’s, why aren’t iPhone users around the world having the same problems as those here in the U.S.? How come iPhone carriers in Europe and Canada turned on tethering support as soon as iPhone OS 3.0 was released, and AT&T still, seven months later, has not?
...
If it’s the iPhone’s fault, why have iPhone/AT&T reception problems gotten worse over time?
Ok - fine. It's is AT&T's fault. My Blackberry works better than your iPhone on AT&T's network by magic. That blog looks like more fanboy crud to me, and he doesn't seem to be citing any actual data. Just casual observations that when you poll people on consumer reports, many of whom have iPhones, they may respond that the network sucks because they don't know, or care to know, the difference. I'm sticking with nimbus of infallibility.

So to just check emails/Hotmail, look at forums like Flyertalk and Facebook, you think I'd be OK with 300MB? Youtube can wait until I get home.

No. I really think you should go unlimited. You listed so many activities in your OP that there is no way you will confine yourself (I'm guessing of course, I don't know you) to just email and forums. And obsessive forum reading/posting can use a whole bunch of data as well. Take the unlim plan so you never have to worry and use your new expensive phone as it was meant to be used.

Or go unlimited and see what ur actual usage turns out to be and go to 300MB if you find you can swing it comfortably.

I have an iPhone with 6GB of data a month and if I'm not tethering it I can't come close to using that much.

I purchased a data plan for the states (my 6GB of data is Canada only) and got 75MB worth. In 8 days of fairly heavy use (browsing, google maps mainly) I used just over 75MB.

The main places I use data at home are public transit to make an hour long bus ride more tolerable. Almost everywhere else I have Wifi or other access. You may want to consider when you think you would use data (IE bus, train, hotel rooms) and that may help you decide if you need 1GB of data.
