i'm the oddball here as i never liked handbrake to convert dvd's on a mac as i prefer popcorn. it's not free (current is version 4 for $49.99 but i'm happy with version 3) but it works like a charm-just drag and drop and that's it.
as to ripping dvd's i use mactheripper for both my non-copy protected dvd's and copy protected ones but that's another story

I think, in order to use Handbrake on the mac at least you'll also need to have the VLC media player installed. Handbrake alone won't decode DVD's

If you need to remove copy protection then I think DVD shrink does that, and you can then use handbrake on the resultant VOB files.

DVD shrink only works for pc, right. If you need something beyong handbrake for ripping, with VLC then mactheripper is good. there is a free version and a paid version which works with MORE dvds.

I use the free/free option of DVD43 and Handbrake. Works like a charm, except with my 64 bit Vista machine.
