I have to send a couple of thousand dollars to a couple in South Africa to cover my half of an upcoming vacation. (Twenty year friends who we've vacationed with all around the world)
To get the money in to Rand, I'm thinking of using Xoom.com to send it into their bank account. Has anyone ever dealt with them? I've watched their ads on BBC and looked at their website. I'm just looking for some personal anecdotes or opinions.

I used it to send some money once. I had never heard of it before but it worked with no problems and the fees are pretty cheap, especially compared to Western Union. I have no in depth info on the service though as my experience was limited but positive.
