Down jacket in a space bag
So, i have a number of space bags -- the type where you need a vacuum cleaner to pull the air out. Works wonders on my memory foam pillow. Now I am wondering whether it would harm my down winter jacket. It was pretty expensive so I did not dare to try...

I wouldn't use a vacuum-type bag, as the suction could conceivably pull the down feathers out of the jacket. A regular space bag (where you compress the bag down) should be okay, but as a general rule, you aren't supposed to compress down for any extended period of time.

Another suggestion is that you don't fold the jacket the same way each time you put it in the bag. Just like a sleeping bag, the best way to compress it is to just stuff it in the bag. If it is a dress coat, you will be fine folding it.

I was returning a down jacket to my sister who'd left it after a visit to us and as postage was based on a combination of weight and size of parcel it was a no-brainer to reduce the size. Jacket arrived safely and once shaken out a few times and left on hanger for a few hours it was it's usual fullness.
