"Hard" coach seat solution?

A number of posters complain about hard seats in coach especially noticeable on long flights. Some friends have recommended a self inflatable seat cushion offered by Magellan ($49.99). Can anyone offer a confirming positive opinion of this cushion?

You should post this question in the Travel Products forum.

Wear and tear will break the seam and it won't stay inflated.

I have found that a few extra blankets folded neatly do the trick - had an FA laugh at me once for doing it

The best solution I have found (recommended by another frequent international traveller) is the "Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat". It's a self inflating seat cushon designed for backpacking (packs small and light). Whenever I'm on a flight of more than 2 hours in coach I drop it in my briefcase and use it. Amazing difference. The key thing is that you need very little air in it. If you put to much air in it, it feels like you're sitting on a baloon.

You can get them at REI for < $30US. Here's a link to a description:

I thought I was the only one noticing these hard seats. Flew UA last week and I had to constantly shift my butt.

The worst seats I encounter are the CO B777 coach seats. The very hard molded foam is definitely not shaped to comfort my butt.

I was just at my local REI, and they have the Thermarest one for $30. They also have an REI-branded one that includes a stuff sack for $20.

easiest solution? a nearly empty plane where you can take up two seats and shift yourself sideways.

I need to invent a memory foam coach seat

Those things really vacuum down to near nothing, it could be a small battery powered air suction device that you put the foam into and then it shrinks down a huge amount of the size when it has air

Now someone will take my idea.

Just flew IAH/EWR and EWR/MAD on CO 757's. Both were full flights!
Used the magellan self inflatable seat cushion on the longer flight (TATL) and found tail bone didn't hurt at all, whereas on the domestic leg without the cushion, it did hurt!

Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat works

One of my friends hurt her back a few years ago and had to stop being a landscape designer as a result. She travels now about six weeks out of the year and takes her Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat everywhere. She says it really works.

I've got a 8+ hour economy seat flight coming up in 3 weeks, I jus may have to pickup one of these ThermaLite seats as my tush always goes numb on longhaul flights!
