12 months of backpacking and 25 odd flights later mine is in perfect condition still. No extra bags, just tightened all straps and tucked in parts of the strap(s) that were sticking out.

Never had a problem.

Our local Dollar-type store has suitable bags to checking backpacks for a $1. They have them in several colors. Don't know if this is a 'one of' situation or if this is common in Dollar stores.
