I just bought a Streamlight Stylus flashlight, the size of a regular pen! I bought it with the glare guard (protects the LED as well) and a lens attachment for spotlight that just slips on the front! Works very nicely! The only caveat is that it uses three AAAA batteries, which are hard to find here, you can buy the batteries by the caseload in Asia though!

glad it worked out. This is a great light for travel because it is bright, small and uses standard AA batteries.

If you are in the market for a second light, consider the Fenix 1LP which uses a single AA battery and is very, very bright for its very small size. I would say it's maybe half the size of the Streamlight Luxeon Jr.

A couple of years ago my wife sat beside an aircraft accident investigator for the Transportaton Safety Board. He told her he always carries a flashlight aboard a flight. Good enough for me. I bought mini-maglights for both of us. It's also important to have a flashlight in case of an emergency or power failure in a hotel. Neither of us ever travel without a flashlight now, two if we're travelling together. I like the mini maglite because is has a lantern mode, so you can set it on a table to light a whole room or bathroom.

Replace the bulbs in them with a Terralux Ministar 5 LED and you will like them a lot more. I have a some Minimags I have done that with. It gives them better run time, brighter, almost breakproof and the bulbs wont burn out.

Do you know of any such cool upgrade for the mini-mini-maglite (the solitaire, that takes one AAA battery)?

Arc Aaa

I've been carrying around the ARC AAA for a few years now and have to say that it is worlds apart from the mini-maglite. Hard anodized aluminum. LED bulb which will last for an extremely long time. Battery life that is superb.

Check out the link. For small keychain flashlights the Arc AAA is the benchmark.

I've carried this on my keys and it has come in handy countless times. Even if you choose to carry a surefire in your bag, its nice to have a small light that is easily accessible

That is a good idea. I hadn't found an led light that I liked, but I love mags.

Also, for about $4.50 you can put a Kroll tailswitch on a minimag so that you can keep it at whatever focus you like and use the switch for the on/off instead of turning the focusing head. The LED doesnt interfere with using them in candle mode either, although the tailswitch might interfere.

Although for a real candle mode try pointing a Surefire KL4 head (with a replacement tailswitch so it can stand on its end) at a ceiling. Its pretty much like standard room lighting. It is literally 10 times as bright as a minimag and about the same size.

^ I have three Arc AAA. A 2003 CPF Edition, a Limited Edition, and one of the current ARC-P.

One or another of them has been all over the world with me. One of those things I would not travel without!

I would think that the TSA would have a problem with a C or D cell MagLite. "But it's just a flashlight" (that I can bludgeon my obnoxious rowmate with)

Glad to see that so many non-military/law enforcement people know about SureFire. They make a superb product. I've been carrying an E2. I need to review their latest catalog for Santa requests.

I also carry a powerful PrincetonTec LED light (AAA powered) because there are times I don't want to worry about losing a $$$ light such as a SureFire.

Anyone have recommendations for smaller flashlights that have a clip?

Like the StreamLight Clipmate? I was going to get the Clipmate, but then didn't hear the best things...

Thanks.

Reading this thread got me interested in getting a decent flashlight eventually. Then the other day while in Costco I saw a "Coast Led Lenser V2 Tac Torch" 1.25 watt single LED flashlight that supposedly has a 50 hour runtime on the 3 AAA batteries it uses. Made in China but has a quality German look and feel to it. Very very powerful white and bright light. 4.4 inches long. Seems very nice for the money ($29.95). Lifetime warranty (and easy to return anytime if necessary at Costco).

The only negatives I could see are: it's "water resistant" not waterproof; possibility that the rear button style on off switch could be accidently depressed while in a pack which would run down the batteries, and finally, because the back (switch end) is slightly rounded it can't be easily used in "candle stick" mode.

But the price, returnability, runtime, common batteries, power and quality of the beam, and quality look and feel outweighed those negatives for me. Really an incredible piece of equipment for the money, imho.

I just replaced the bulbs in two 3-D Cell maglights with DB-3W 5500K Diamond L.E.D. Light bulbs ^ 80 lumens, and make a world of difference over the halogens I had in them before.
