As good a place as any to ask this question. Any FT geeks got the Nomos Tangomat GMT?

http://www.nomos-store.com/en/Watche...stal-back.html

It has IATA city codes and an altimeter style date function.

I have a regular Tangomat because BOG has no daylight saving times so I would be NYC for the winter and then either CHI or wherever is east for the summer. It is not something I easily get my head around. But for people that fly HNL LAX NYC LON and BER it is brilliant.

i have a Nomos Ludwig so similar aesthetics. Nice finishing. Cordovan strap is fantastic... should be used more than just calfskin everywhere

I have slim wrists, so big butch watches look completely stupid on me! For smart wear I either use a Mappin & Webb or a faux Gucci. Otherwise I dig into an assorted collection of 6 [or more] cheap, throw-away, watches that look reasonable and tell the right time :)

Right now it's a black case 'something' from WalMart which cost $11.98 and tells me it's 10:08 which seems about right.

Rolex Submariner. It's the most important travel accessory. Not only does it immediately say "I can afford a $9,000 watch" but people get out of your way, strangers listen to what you have to say, women swoon, executives give you that look, waiters give you priority, and a rollup of the wrist can lead to upgrades without mileage deductions. It's like driving a BMW but fits into places a luxury car simply can't.

I collect watches, new and vintage, must have about 50 choices by now, but nothing gets more wrist time than my Rolex Sub Date. Without it, I feel like half a man.

LOL!

You forgot the part where if you find yourself in a foreign land without funds you can pawn your watch to pay for your way home.

The other myth is how Rolex owners risk having their arms cut off in developing countries so poor villagers can steal their watch. ;)

I like Omegas better. :D

Meh...

I bought a a Rolex a few years ago. At first it looked great, but after a month or two it started to tarnish, and then it looked like finish was rubbing off altogether. It never did keep very good time, and finally a few months later, it just quit working completely.

I tried to return it, but I could never find the guy walking around Times Square again. What a total waste of fifty bucks that was.

My high quality fake Patek Phillippe and Vacheron Constantin watches accomplish the same things. $35 each in the central market in Saigon after hard negotiation. BTW, Doc, those well negotiated $35 fakes in Saigon tend to sell for over $200 in the U.S. if you can find them. A $50 US fake is akin to a $10 fake bought in the right places in Asia. I would also add that I wear the same Casio F-91W for sports as you do.

T8191 Mar 1, 2016 9:46 am

My 1967 Seiko 'shake and wind' is still perfectly functional. Possibly the best £5 I ever spent ... apart from my marriage licence ;)

DaveBlaine Mar 1, 2016 9:53 am

Today it's an Orient Automatic Blue Mako on a Nato strap.

Oh, and did I already miss the "there is a clock on my cell phone" post?

I don't see how you can have a fake Patek or Vacheron Constantin. Both companies are famous for their intricate detailing on their movements. So say Mr Chinese counterfeiter puts a Myota movement in something that resembles a Patek case. It is still obviously not the real deal. Better surely to buy a fake Rolex as they never have an exhibition case.

I have an A Lange and Söhne 1815 and a Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Power Reserve and one of the things I like about them is that the replica guys are still a couple of decades away from being able to copy them.

This is the back of a Lange Zeitwork (I think) and they are simply not able to replicate that

I was reading the /r/watches subreddit and those guys go crazy for this watch. I had never heard of it.

T8191 Mar 1, 2016 10:13 am

Ok, I dragged out the time stuff. They all seems to tell the same time ... OK, I cheated with a couple that need winding, or a new battery, and the little Ben Sherman is dead. The point is ... they just tell the time, legibly, which is all I require of a watch. It is not intended to be a phallic extension ;)

The gold sovereign on the watch-chain is probably worth more than all of them put together :D

Go for it. Very affordable automatic movement. The Orient Ray is a very solid dive watch as well.

wouldn't a GMT Master or GMT Master II be a better option for traveling? Do you dive on your travels? Perhaps jobs for National Geographic?

I like the GMT Master II better. I can sport two colors on my watch without looking like I'm a clown wearing huge watches that is bigger than your own wrist. But I don't like the maintenance cost every 5 years or so and don't like the self winding mechanism - the darn thing is not accurate if you don't wear it everyday.

IsleOfMan Mar 1, 2016 10:39 am

I just wish Orient had a GMT in a dive case... there aren't many GMT Master homages from the more reputable mfgs, at least not nearly as many as there are Submariner and SeaMaster homages (the latter of which the Blue Mako is an obvious homage to, the Diver 300M at least). I'm not quite ready to spend Steinhart GMT-Ocean money for an homage, but I don't want to go super-cheap and get a Parnis either (though the sterile ones have tempted me).
