Best footwear for summer travel?

What are your recommendations for footwear if you are traveling to somewhere warm and humid (Thailand) and may need to run fast in case of an emergency (coup d'etat)? The second part of the question is a joke. I usually just wear flip flops, but given the amount of walking I will be doing, I do not think flip flops are a good idea. Besides the basic sneakers, does anyone have other recommendations? Preferably ones that are not hideous (aka Merrell).

I have ECCO sandals that the rear strap can be remove to get a quasi flip-flop wear.

I like Chaco flip flops because they have good arch support. Some of the styles can be dressed up a tiny bit. I also like Mephisto sandals again for the support when walking.

You are asking for the "Best" no limitations on price or other criteria.
These will wok in most any situation.

Sandals really only belong on the beach. No one wants to see your toes.

I have Birkenstock Gizeh sandals and Chaco sandals - both show the toes but I'm a rebel like that.

I swear I tried almost every walking sandal out there for a trip to Europe and ended up with Arche Satia. Pricey but incredibly comfortable and cool. Highly recommend.

I assume the OP is a male given his Flickr page, but then again he is going to Thailand so maybe he does need an androgynous sandal for the club.

Many locals wear Crocs and the various knock-offs.

I am male, and I agree that there are no dress sandals... but there are some sandals that will go with dark colored, not-faded jeans while others do not. I tried some Vibram this weekend and hated them. I know that people say shoes are bad for you and all that stuff, but I'd rather have sore feet than look like an idiot wearing Vibrams.

I just dont like traveling wearing sandals. Not enough protection.

I have never been more glad that I was wearing Gore-Tex lined shoes (Ecco low cut hikers) than when I looked down and saw the fluid I was standing in while in the men's room of a strip bar in Phuket.

I was thinking protection from stubbed toes or gravel under the soles, but ok!

Protection is protection.

I should add that at the time, there were 5 of us in the restroom. I was trying to use it for its more classical use, the other 4 were two couples who were using it for other purposes.
