dozens of places sell it

Some include evacuation, some don't or you can buy just evacuation. If you buy it, make sure you are understanding what you are buying, some are very specific of what they cover for evacuation, it's not just as simple as you decide you would prefer to be treated someplace else, fly me there.

Some have annual policies, some don't

As nobody knows what you have paid, what coverages you have, and what you need coverage for, it's going to be hard for anybody to actually say if you could do better or not. You need to find other policies that cover what you want covered, and compare service and prices.

Huh? I don't see the point of your comment. See this?

A version of this article appeared in print on 02/03/2013, on page TR2 of the NewYork edition with the headline: To Buy or Not to Buy: Weighing the Risks.

I had an annual policy from Travelex Insurance the past couple of years. I never made a claim though, but at the time their rate and coverage seemed decent. Their annual policy is called Business Traveler.

I only buy if one or both of the following conditions are met:

1) Substandard health care and the potential need for evacuation.

2) Large, upfront cash payments required for treatment.

In those situations, I've used Travel Nomads. Excellent policies for not much money.

referencing an FT 'celebrity' as "NYT article" seems silly to me
(i would equate with referencing "article" when its Randy)

especially because media like NYT are comparatively unreliable

Easily.

www.worldnomads.com is OK, but pretty bare bones stuff. InsureMyTrip.com or Squaremouth.com are both reasonable (good range of options and reasonable prices) for US-based travellers. Personally, I prefer the squaremouth website for layout and ease of use, but YMMV, obviously.

I didn't come across many annual travel insurance policies, from the ones I found and compared Morgan Price Travel insurance looked pretty good to me:

They have quite attractive annual prices, especially when it comes to couples / families.

We have used International SOS on several occasions and been very happy with them. They found me a very good doctor in Zambia when i was really sick. They do evacuations as well if needed. There was a long thread discussing the various options on FT a few years ago that had a wealth of information.

I get it now. Grassy knoll, black helicopters, death panels, unreliable media ... makes sense

This was also published in the print version of the NYT, does that not qualify as an article?

last attempt to explain - if Randy Petersen wrote an article, i would link it as "Randy" not "an article in x"
