Question Cable Management when Traveling

Anyone have any good bags or packs they use for holding all their little cables when they travel?

I've used pouches, but everything gets tangled and it's hard to take out one cable at a time. I figured some toiletry kit would work great, but I can't seem to find any small enough.

Thanks!
Erik

Look at the Tom Bihn snake charmer it is a small pouch for cables and small items. I use a UA first class amenity bag to carry extra cellphones and chargers when overseas. I also have a small e- bags pouch to carry meds and small items.

My low tech approach has worked good for me: I tie a rubber band to each cable, and pack the cable down to about 4" and secure it with the rubber band...

If the cables are not too inflexible, you can use them to manage themselves by modifying the knot in the video. Just make a shorter tail at the end and pull it completely through. The coil will stay together since cables don't flop around as much as ropes do.

I use those garbage bag twist ties. I twist one onto each cable, usually in the middle of the twist tie. This way it's always there for me to wrap the cable around my hand, join the ends of the twistie, and it keeps everything in order.

I use retractable cables when possible (which won't get tangled); the rest of the cables I seal into individual snack-size ziploc bags. Then they all go into a bigger ziploc bag.

With my work I often carry an entire carryon's worth of cables. These velcro wraps are available at your local home depot and work really well to keep cables organized:

For smaller items and adapters, I store them in zippered padded pouches like these:

I too use the retractable cables and would recommend those.

Here is an alternative solution to pouches which is an organizer using elastic bands to keep small items together.

Which retractable cables do people recommend? In response to the question by the op I use gear bags or gear pouches from www.sfbags.com.

I have a bag full of retractable USB cables, as well as other random cables, from Phillips. Some have lasted me more than a year now, which is a long time with the retractable cords. I have not found a retractable iPhone/iPad cord yet though.

Retractable cables can be found for cheap on eBay. Search for retractable iPod cable, USB, mini USB, etc.

Multiprong approach

I typically look to:

a) ELIMINATE cables, I upgraded to a 1tb laptop drive rather than carry an external drive in addition. The system runs a touch slower, but it's worth the hassle!

b) REDUCE the number of cables by getting more usb chargable items then I only need one cord to card 3 different items.

c) GET SHORTER cords whenever possible. Why do I need a 4' cord when a 18" one will do? (http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2). Note the space taken up by a 18" cord is a bit less than a retractible.

d) If I need a longer cable (e.g. I take a longer dock connector cable so I can charge my iphone while on a call) then I USE CABLE WRAP (http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 is good as you can cut it to size).

e) Finally I ORGANIZE the cables in small bags, ziplock will work, I use eagle creek small sacks (http://www.eaglecreek.com/packing_so...c-Small-41075/ as I can fit electronics in as well).
