Nicest Weekender/Holdall

A friend of mine wants to buy a classy weekender/holdall. You know, the classic satchel style. Leather preferred. Upper price limit around $800. Cheaper is nicer but anything below $200 will probably not be nice enough. Label is not important.

I suggested the Mulholland Bros. Longhorn bag:
http://shopmulholland.com/product.ht...uct=AL1047-LAR

There are ways to get that under $800. And I use that mainly as an example of the kind of bag he is looking for.

What's your favorite bag of this kind? Doesn't matter if you own one or would just like to own it.

Thanks,

Till

I was looking at duffels recently. The Coach Large Cabin Bag is simiilar to the Mulholland, at a lower price point and you know Coach has good quality and will warranty their product.

Recently picked up a leather Tumi Canyon Grand Getaway at one of their outlet stores for $240 (MSRP $595). The model is discontinued and I don't think on sale anywhere else right now, but if your friend is close to one of the outlets it is a great bag.

Is this a test? ;)

From one of your own posts....

And spot on in my opinion.

I've always wanted to own a bag of this type as well. My requirements are that it be free-standing and is made of quality leather. The Longhorn does seem to fit that rather well.

However, when I get to seriously considering one the extra weight of the leather and the fact that it won't really look right with an absolute strap on it always makes me second guess a purchase.

Up until a few years ago B&R made their satchels in leather as well as ballistic. I bought one of the old style ballistic ones a couple years ago. I considered the leather but didnt spring for the extra money for it. It wasnt really very much, they were hugely reduced on closeout. I sort of regret not doing it now.

This is not a test!

No grades, either, although I really like the suggestions so far. Many thanks.

Yes the Glaser Design is super classic and classy and within the price range. That would be really quite nice.

I also showed him some of the Aspinal stuff from England. Unfortunately, that is above the limit.

The Peterman bag looks very much like Mulholland's Safari bag. I like both. Too bad that Peterman has that stupid artistic website where they have only drawings of the products. I want to see how the leather looks and how the textile looks when I buy things (especially in that price range).

The Tumi Carry-on for $240 is one heck of a steal and a really nice bag. Not quite the classic holdall design but a more rendition. I won't have a chance to get to the Tumi outlet for the next month or so but might even buy one for myself if they have one.

I admit to be somewhat on the same quest as my friend. I just have a hard time justifying yet another bag, particularly one this expensive, and the rational side of it that kingalien mentioned also bothers me. They are heavy, not the most practical to pack, easily get water stains, look funky if you use a good strap and so on.

So I am not quite sure if I ever go through with a purchase. My friend on the other hand doesn't have those qualms. Good for him. And for me so I can live vicariously through his purchase, so to say.

Does anyone know whether the Longhorn has feet so it won't stand directly on a wet floor? I think that's a pretty important design aspect in a leather bag.

Johnston & Murphy makes some nice bags, too. They have a rubber sole on them. Also a more modern style but still very good looking.

http://www.queensleather.co.uk/ProductCard.asp?Pid=9747 could maybe be an idea at the lower end of the price scale. However, they carry high quality products the Scotsmen.

Yea I agree about the practicality. I have been coveting a Glaser Design bag for a couple decades at one level. But I have never pulled the trigger on one because I just can't justify it to myself on a practicality side. Maybe instead of another Swiss watch and i can use the money I'm saving to help with the rationalization.

I bought a bag similar to the Peterman bag and it turned out to be the perfect size for the weekend if you travel light. An extra pair of pants, a couple of shirts, underwear, socks. It's small and light enough that I don't feel the need to run to the hotel first to drop it off.

I like a bag that comes a little distressed already. The first scratch on a beautiful expensive bag would reduce me to tears....

It would seem that the Peterman is a knock off, at a greatly discounted price, of this one.

Although I prefer this from the same company. But it too exceeds the $800 cap. But there is always LOTTO!!

I was just looking at the Aspinal website and their leather weekend bag is well under $800. It is 360 GBP. It looks quite nice too.

King Ranch, yes THE King Ranch has some wonderful luggage in their catalog. http://www.krsaddleshop.com/category...cd2=1259337865

Mr. Penny has this leather bag http://www.krsaddleshop.com/armstron...p/200566KRL23/ . Never would I have spent that much for my own use. He is not a penny pincher. It is a beautiful bag, but heavy empty. Improves with age and use. Very sexy bag.
