Quite frankly, the OP probably does not want the D90 if his interest is in video. While it was a ground-breaking camera at the time, the technology is five years old and it was Nikon's first DSLR with a movie mode. It is not true HD and the movie mode is archaic by today's standards. A used D7000 would be far more compelling.

Cheers,
T.

D90 was 720p only, D3100 is 1080p, plus apparently better video controls, I say apparently because of what reviews say about the 3100, and I have the D90 and I know its many shortcomings, so the D3100 does have better video than the D90. Yes, D5000 looks to be the same as the D90, which is poor.

It's a moot point looking at prices. If the OP provided some prices they found, then it would be a simple exercise to help the OP rank the cameras.

Once we start venturing into D7000/7100, 3100/3200, 5000/5100 territory, you need to then start asking what video options you want. Do you want 24 and 30fps for each resolution, or only 24fps? What about the option for slo mo at 60fps? Some of these only do 24fps, which is a pain if you are editing and mixing videos of different fps sources. Do you want the flexibility to be able to shoot for different formats ie NTSC and PAL? What about audio recording options? What would the OP like?

It comes down to the budget and requirements of the OP, without knowing that we can discuss this for days.

Yep agree. I love my D90 but there are far better video recording options out there today.

I agree - the OP should probably be looking at the D7000 and D5100 as the best alternatives that can be gotten at reasonable prices, being the predecessors to the current models. If the expectation is to be buying on the Internet, the D7000 can be found for under $700, and the D5100 for under $600. That extra $100 buys an internal AF motor and more rugged build quality (and unfortunately, some added size and weight due to those) - otherwise, the cameras are quite similar in overall capabilities - basically because Nikon took the existing imaging subsystem of the D7000 and dropped it into the D5100 nearly unchanged.

BTW, Adorama is selling Nikon D7000 Manufacturer's Refurb bodies, with 30 day return privileges and a 90 day Nikon warranty, for $599 with free shipping. That's probably as good a deal as can be found on this.

They are also selling NEW D5100 bodies for $497, but shipping isn't free on those.
