Exactly why I correct anyone at the airline if they say I am upgrading for "free" as a way of downgrading my rights or privileges that accrue to the upgrade.

They sold or awarded those miles in their own financial interest. I bought them with loyalty or money. Not free.

I read somewhere a few years ago that airline mile "currency" is the largest in the world - no currency can top it. It will never happen but I feel airlines should go back to extending awards first and foremost to those that actually FLY tens of thousands of miles and actually spend money on airline tickets. I just can't equate "loyalty" to Mr and Mrs Consumer who bought that refrigerator at Sears.
