Thumbs down EU to US: Pay for cabron emissions or face flight sanctions

Another piece of nonsense relating to carbon emissions/global warming...

http://www2.u.tv/BusinessNews/index....ate=14/03/2008

I like how the EU is threating to not allow certain flights to the EU by US carriers if they don't buy offset credits. Of course, that will just lead to the US imposing flight sanctions on European airlines...

Damn politics...

The original headline, with "cabron" miss-keyed for "carbon" is a howler! "Cabron" is the Spanish equivalent (but not translation) of SoB.

I am sure the US has emitted more than its fair share of cabrones.

I'm skeptical that the EU has the ability to do this - can anybody who knows comment. Surely the most they can do is lean on national governments ?

But either way, it's a dumb idea - GVA, ZRH, OSL, etc would surely love to become the EU gateway of choice for US carriers.

Ever heard of Open Skies? The only national government able to directly negotiate things on EU-US routes is the US one.

Are you assuming that the EU can't easily "convince" these countries that trying to steal trade from their EU neighbours and/or EEA partners is not in their interest?
OTOH, Minsk may well become an up-and-coming destination for US airlines.

Not applicable; this is a tax/trade matter (and governed by WTO traety obligations). I guess EU rules the roost on trade, but don't EU governments still control their own taxation (except VAT) ?

Money talks.

The EU is evidently determined to start a green trade war, regarless of WTO treaty obligations. First GMOs, now this, and if this doesn't do it, I'm sure they'll find something else.

Not the US is lily white on trade matters (eg steel tarrifs)

Technically, yes. In practice, most forms of indirect taxation (from fuel duty to VAT exemptions) are "harmonised".

I am not convinced that the EU wants to fight a "green trade war" or anything else large-scale. It's just that green taxes are fashionable, and many Eurocrats are anxious to show that they are being useful to their citizens and the planet....
I usually think that these people are targeted unfairly and blamed for everything but the weather, however I view green taxes as totally inappropriate, at least for a trade bloc that continues doing business with India and (to a lesser extent) China.
