Tourist Ship Icebound Off Antarctica, 186 Aboard, Icebreaker on the way to rescue
BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) A Bahamas-registered tourist ship with 186 pax and crew is stuck in ice off the coast of Antarctica awaiting the arrival of an ice breaker to set it free, Argentina's Navy said.
The 'Clipper Adventure,' carrying 115 paxs and 71 crew, was sailing in the Straight of Matha west of the Antarctic Peninsula when a change of wind unexpectedly dragged ice around it, the Navy said in a news release.
`Those aboard are not currently in danger, but there is a risk that the icecap could cause severe danger to the ship's motors and propellers,' it noted.
A Navy icebreaker, the 'Almirante Irizar,' was in the area supplying Argentina's Almirante Brown Antarctic Base, and it has sailed to the rescue. It's due to reach the stricken ship by 8 pm Argentine time (6 pm EST). The 330-foot long Clipper Adventure sailed from the Argentine port of Ushuaia in the far southern island of Tierra del Fuego on 1/28, and was attempting to sail between the islands of Belgrano and Liard when it became trapped.
