Boeing won agreement from Hawaiian Air for 13 , 100seat 717 jets valued@430million

WSJ reports this announcement lining up another buyer at a critical time for languishing BA. The letter of intent is so far unsigned and thus not a firm oreder. Delivery is set for 2001. Included are future purchase options for 7 more.

Yesterday BA announce a layoff of 600 workers in Long Beach.

AI has been linig up a steady stream of buyers for its competing A-318. Followwing the announcement earlier this week from aleasing venture, AI is near announcing an order from America West Airlines

Only Air Tran, TWA have so far placed any large orders for 717's, along witha few smaller operators. BA is still hoping to get British Air to go this 717 route or perhaps another larger carrier.

Hawaiian, the 12th largest US carrier, plans to replace aging DC-9's with these aircraft. this raises the steaks in the battle with Aloha Air which has about 60% of the inter-island market.

Another fine credit! I think the success of this program is about as likely as none of these purchasers ending up in bankruptcy during the next recession.

717-200: 115 firm orders and 110 options
A318: 127 firm orders and commitments

Yeah, the A318 is really beating the 717-200 ...

(BTW, I'm not exactly sure if a "commitment" is a firm order or option in Boeing terms ...)

As for the 717, it's rumored that BA is taking 50 copies. Some sort of "exchange" to take place, with Boeing taking back some 757's.

In the 26 Sept 99 Sunday paper in HNL, HA took a full page ad to announce the first 13 717-200s as definite for delivery in 2001, and that the aircraft include a FC cabin.

The 717s can't come soon enough. I won't miss deplaning through the DC-9 ovipositor into jet blast.

BTW- VERY OMNI- I noted with great sadness the announcement that HNL will lose its longstanding local newspaper, the Honolulu Advisor, which is quite old indeed. Particularly unfortunate, in my view, due to the focus of TV news coverage on Island news rather than National and International. A sad trend across the world.
