Northwest Airlines and Japan Air System Inaugurate Code-Share Service
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlines (Nasdaq: NWAC) and Japan Air System (JAS) will inaugurate code-share service effective Aug. 7, 1999 between Osaka and Okinawa and ***uoka, Japan. The start of code-share service marks the beginning of a larger alliance between the two carriers which began in November, 1997 when they introduced reciprocal frequent flyer programs. JAS is one of the largest domestic carriers in Japan.
Northwest operates nonstop service between Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Seattle, Los Angeles and Honolulu and Osaka's Kansai International Airport. Effective Saturday, a Northwest flight code will appear on JAS' connecting service between Kansai and Okinawa and ***uoka. The result is "seamless" travel for passengers including issuance of all boarding passes at initial check-in, through luggage transfers and convenient flight connections. In addition, members of each carrier's frequent flyer programs can earn and redeem mileage awards on each airline's flights.
Northwest and JAS plan to expand code-share service to other JAS domestic routes and to Northwest's extensive U.S.-Japan routes as well as routes between Japan and other points in Asia.
The partnership that Northwest and JAS formed in 1997 was strengthened through an alliance agreement signed in June, 1999. JAS, based in Tokyo, operates more domestic routes in Japan than any other carrier. It operates a fleet of jets including Boeing 777s, MD90s and Airbus 300s. JAS also operates international service to Seoul, Korea, and Guangzhou, Xian, Kunming and Hong Kong, China.
Minnesota-based Northwest provides the most service between the United States and Osaka and operates "beyond" flights from Osaka to Manila, Philippines; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Northwest also operates nonstop service to Tokyo from New York, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Anchorage and Honolulu and operates beyond service from Tokyo to nine major Asian cities.
