Flights between Netherlands and Egypt cancelled after terrorism threat

The Dutch Intelligence Agency AIVD has warned Dutch airlines that there is a threat for a terrorist attack this week on a flight between the Netherlands and Egypt.

Dutch airline Transavia has cancelled it's Friday and Saturday flights to Sharm al-Sheikh. Another airline, Corendon, was planning to re-commence flying the AMS - Egypt routes on October 27, but is now reconsidering.

Isn't cancelling the flights altogether an implicit admission that they don't trust their own security protocols on the ground? A bit troubling...

The threat is said to be ground-to-plane rockets fired on arrival in Egypt.

Strange that only the Dutch cancel flights. Are they more cautious than others? I wouldn't think they have more info (or that they wouldn't share that info). Ground-to-Air from Sinaļ desert seems a threat for all flights and I don't see a reason why the Dutch would be specifically targeted.

Sigh...as if Egypt really needs more negative press. Their tourism industry is already on life-support given all the turmoil they had in the last two years.

Yes, as does Egyptair, but the warning relates to surface-to-air rockets fired from the Sinai desert, so only applies to flights to the desert holiday resorts.

Even if it was about smuggling a bomb onboard etc., I'd be deeply troubled if security services just assumed airport security around the globe was infallible. Particularly in unstable countries like Egypt.

The very first line says "The Dutch Intelligence Agency AIVD has warned Dutch airlines that there is a threat for a terrorist attack this week on a flight between the Netherlands and Egypt."

I have no idea why the Dutch are allegedly being targeted in particular, but that's why only Dutch airlines cancelled flights.

The article has since been amended to state that there is no specific threat against the Dutch.
