Strollers

I am travelling with four children (one is 2 yrs old), are you still allowed to "gate check" strollers just prior to boarding? I would prefer to have it in the airport, and not check it as luggage. I am flying Spirit on an MD-80.

I flew Spirit to DC in June/July and gate checked a stroller.

Does the stroller have to fit in the overhead? Do they offer special storage for it?

Nope. just ask for a tag when you check in or from the gate agent. You park it near the door of the plane, collasped. They take it from there and will bring it back near the plane door when you arrive. (At least this was my experience every time I've flown)

We gate check our 11 month old's stroller all the time and it takes about 5-10 minutes to arrive (much quicker than checking it) The only place where this doesn't happen is HNL. strollers are unloaded curbsite where the bus to the baggage claim departs from.
