Patriot should be in the Compact SUV class. Intermediate SUV should be Dodge Nitro or Jeep Liberty.
Honestly, though, the Patriot isn't much smaller than the Liberty--actually, its seating feels roomier than the Liberty. It's just lower to the ground and on a car platform rather than the stiffer truck platform. (It's more or less a rebranded Dodge Caliber with a slightly bigger, heavier body and with AWD. It is pretty gutless, though, although it beats a Dodge Nitro in a side-by-side race.) I've seen the Patriot subbed for the Liberty before without customer complaint.
If you really need to know, you can try to contact someone directly at the location directly (as opposed to someone in a centralized reservations/help-desk call-center) at 407-583-8000 (try option 2 or remain on the line for an operator). That's actually Dollar, but you can probably ask them what's on the Thrifty lot, or even if not, what's on their lot (since there's a good chance they share a fleet).
