Why is Phuket so expensive?

I didn´t find hotels in Phuket and general services so expensive...compared to his neighbourg Cambodia, it could be...but compared with Europe or other top travel destinations, Thailand is cheap...considering that phuket is in fact a top destination with some of the best beaches in the world, like the ones in the near Phi Phi Island...

FYI, Marriott has recently opened (or, rather, renovated and rebranded) three Courtyards in Phuket at Surin, Kamala and Patong, which are all doing opening promos for <US$100/night with breakfast and other frills included. Valid until Dec 15th and again after Jan 3rd.
