So 4 hours after mom leaves and that's the time you want to kill?
Problem is that you'll need to be back to the airport 2 hours before the flight, so you've only got 2 hours to deal with. Time of day will be critical. If it's rush hour (either one) bring a book to the airport. Too much risk trying to go somewhere. Middle of the day or late evening, take a taxi down to BTS Morchit then go to Paragon, MBK, Rajprasong, or similar and get a good meal and kill some time shopping. Not much more you can do in an hour or two. Not exciting, but at least you're not at the airport staring at a wall.

So you want to accompany your mother to the airport, see her off, then you have four more hours after that?
Day of week? Time of day?
What do you like to do?
There's a massive Thai market (wet, fresh, etc.) just behind DMK, called Saphan Mai (aka Bang Khen Market) on Pahon Yothin, which might be interesting? There's an IT-ish mall at Chang Watthana. Or you could visit people at Khlong Prem (Lat Yao).

Monday 4-8pm
Maybe best to stay at the airport; assuming it's not a holiday, traffic will be a bear.
You'd have to take a taxi to any of the three "sites" I mentioned. Saphan Mai is pretty much open 7/24/365. It is a traditional Thai market, i.e. "wet" (protein in all its un-refrigerated gory), but there are some eateries, and the usual stuff; anything/everything.

Was at DMK for a BKK-HKT flight on Nok recently and was surprised at how crowded it's gotten. It was high season, granted, but with Thai Lion Air and THAI smile adding operations and Air Asia and Nok seemingly always expanding, all the food concessions appeared packed out and there were more people than anytime I remember since Suvarnabhumi opened.
