Similan Liveaboard Recommendations?
Has anyone dived on the Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock from a liveaboard out of Khao Lak or Phuket?
I would like to hear experiences, especially of lower end trips, 3-5 days. I am going in January 2011.

This remains one of my most memorable diving trips....we saw the whole shebang including whale sharks! The crew/food/accommodation/diving were excellent!

Thanks, Q Shoe Guy.
I have heard from others as well that diving from "The Junk" is a great experience. It certainly sounds very nice. I have friends who dove from the Mermaids, 1 and 2, and they are enthusiastic about that operation. But they are not in my budget range, alas.
I am looking at the low end <THB25K. White Manta, West Coast Explorer, Daranee, Dolphin Queen and South Siam III. Has anyone dove from these, or seen them on the water or at the dock? Any other basic no-frills boats I should know about?

I have been there from Phuket with South Siam divers, but dont remember was this III. We were with them 3 day trip and they were pretty good. Price range for 3 days were around 20000. Also I have lived in Khao Lak and made day trips with Liquid. They had speed boat then. The were very great guys and price range 3000-4000. Also made a day trip to Richelieu Rock, took this from our hotel. It is in much more north, but very good dives. The ship was average and price around 5000. This was 2 and 3 years ago and during Christmas and New Year. I would go to Khao Lak take a hotel there and look around. From Khao Lak evertyhing is cheaper, much closer (you must wake very early) and this is a layd pack small town with lot of divers.

Phuket Divers
My brother and I took our open water certificates with Phuket Divers in Khao Lak.
3-day liveaboard - 11 dives. - 20k THB
It was a great experience!
Good ship, good crew. good food, and a great instructor.
The captain on the ship was very experienced with the waters and the instructor, Brenda, was absolutely amazing.
Diving at the Similans is like diving in a huge aquarium; millions of fish, manta-rays, and if you are lucky whalesharks.
