I'm doing FRA - BKK and BKK - SYD (starting in LHR with J flight to FRA). I'm in BKK for close to twelve hours, I've heard the lounge food isn't anything to write home about? Anything worth trying? The stuff I saw online didn't look much better than J lounge food.

I'll head into BKK during the day anyway - though actually as much as I love Thai food I'll be checking out one of the excellent French restaurants I went to last time I was in BKK. Australia has excellent East Asian food but terrible French food!

FCL lounge is certainly nothing special, just a bit better as the pretty lousy food in J lounge

certainly it is a totally different thing to head to one of the many good French Restaurants in Bangkok.
Which one are you going?
Remember that D'Sense, Le Banyan and le Beaulieu are gone...

Whenever I see a request about "maximizing" the F experience I reflect on this thread:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/luft...ce-thread.html

Personally? The time I "maximized" the TG experience in F it was on a BKK departure. Can't really use the TG F spa or golf carts on a BKK arrival. And the Dom on BKK-HKG (TG 601) was lovely, as were the new (at the time) 747 seats. In the end it was a reasonable way to spend UA miles for a taste of luxury.

certainly correct re spa, but to clarify regarding "golf cart"
on Departure; ride with the small cart from the stairs (from check in/security and immigration down to J lounge) through the J lounge to F lounge. NO cart to the gate unless departure is from E/F/G gates you can opt for a cart ride on arrival level along D terminal, but you have to go through security again and walk from D/E/F/G intersection
On Arrival: cart from the gate to immigration (either normal Immigration or Transit Immigration) unless plane docks at a bus gate or at D4 or other gates close to Immigration area

Possibly Le Normandie but might want to go somewhere a bit more low key for lunch between flights. Maybe The Water Library? Any recommendations?

Le Normandie, Savelberg and maybe l'atelier de Joel Rebuchon are the top notch French Restaurants

good French Food at reasonable prices can be found at Indigo, Aubergine, Lyon and Philippe, which are all around for many years. All 4 have special lunch set menus at surprisingly low prices. Indigo has the broadest selection for the lunch set menu, Aubergine the nicest setting and Philippe probably the finest food among the 4 (but also most expensive)
the most expensive part of my bill is usually the wine...

the Water Library is probably more international then real French...

If you are on the late night departure there will be a very light snack after departure, and a breakfast before landing.

After check in, the staff will walk you to the crew lane for security check. The lounge will be the ANA Suite Lounge, which that time of day will be insanely crowded, to the level it is difficult finding anywhere to sit. No escort from lounge to plane.

I am on a similar itinerary (GUM-NRT/HND-BKK-SYD-ZQN) in January with both TG legs in F, a 0020 departure from HND and a 12 hour layover in BKK (not bad for 60,000 United miles).
When I looked at the TG website I was able to order the eel for the first leg and the thermidor for the second leg. Will the eel be the breakfast? All the other offerings seemed to be dinner entrees.

I would assume that it is for the pre landing meal, but I would also think that they can shift it if you ask them.

If you have a 12-hour transit in BKK, have you given any thought to exiting the airport and taking the train into central Bangkok? Maybe a nice massage and/or meal?

I would not recommend taking the train into the city if you have any carryon bag bigger than a purse. Or perhaps you can store your carryon at a storage locker somewhere at the airport before you head out. The train ride requires long walk.

I recall the one time I took a long haul TG first class a few years ago, no TG staff told me anything about their ground service for first class. I walked and walked after deplaned. Finally at the luggage carousel, I saw my first class FA. He just stood there and watched me struggling to pull the luggage out of the carousel. So much about TG, but I have to say they are all very passive.....meh.

as OP is in F, he could also check in luggage 12 hours in advance (even as J passenger you can do that) or store it at F check in counter (if you need access to your bags upon return from the City)

question: we also have to whole day in transit.. Our checked bags will go on from Tokyo to Sydney, but can you leave your handbags for a few hours in the first class lounge?..We plan to relax for a while, take a shower, go a while to the city, return to the lounge...

thanks

I would never leave unattended bags in any lounge - nor should this be allowed by staff IMHO.

Paid lockers might be better if you have no/few valuables.

FCL staff allows it to store at the lounge reception; so they are not really unattended. I would of course not leave some real valuables…

OP has to tell to ground staff (who pick him up with the golf cart from the arrival gate), that he would like to first go to FCL instead of straight to main immigration and exit
