For BBQ near downtown, Bakers Ribs in Deep Ellum isn't bad. The Angry Dog, right next door, has excellent "bar food" if you get in the mood for that.

Agh, wished I'd posted earlier - I was on my way out of town by the time you posted, techgirl (it was a very quick in-and-out visit). Mama's Daughter's Diner looks great. I did make it to Breadwinners Cafe - I actually managed both locations and have to say that I preferred the newer one to the original. As to Tex-Mex I ended up at Danal's (mentioned upthread) as that worked best with my travel plans.

Just dined at Jasper's in the Woodlands (Houston suburb) and it was fantastic! The maytag blue cheese chips ARE great, and the Allen Brothers filet was excellent. Sure, white wine and red meat don't traditionally go together, but I can't pass up a good glass (or three) of Mer Soleil chardonnay. ;)

As an aside, I hear Kent Rathbun will be on Iron Chef next month, but it's already been taped and he wins.

Cool! Right now it seems like the active core on FT leans towards the western side (Fort Worth/Tarrant County) but that switches every few months. Right now there are some amazing restaurants on our side of the divide... beyond Kincaids and Esparzas and El Fenix that make your list, we've got Tim Love's Love Shack for good cheap burgers, his more expensive sister restaurant (the one that landed him on Iron Chef) Lonesome Dove, a half dozen great Mexican joints like La Familia, and several neighborhood classics like Luciles for brunch.

So if you end up making it west of DFW airport, you know who to call.

Having grown accustomed to the "real thing" in my travels, I have yet to find any southeast Asian cuisine in the Metroplex that really knocks my socks off.

My latest food discovery has been pizza from Cavallis in Irving - little strip mall place that has certification from the society in Naples (one of like 20 restaurants in North America to have it) and cooks amazing authentic Italian pizzas in an oven so hot they cook in about 90 seconds. This one is right around the corner from my office and is now on the twice a week list.

In other notes, definitely need to move Chuys to the Tex-Mex category.

Client is in FW so I'm thinking that is a done deal, just working on specifics and will post in CBuzz.^

Been asked by a friend for a recommendation for a mid-price steakhouse close to the airport(DFW), suitable for a small group for tonight. Any advice?

As a side note Al Biernats was fantastic when I was in Dallas a few months ago.^

For mid-price close to airport Salt Grass (114 West) is pretty good. For high end Silver Fox in Grapevine.

I've received a request from my cousin for recommendations for restaurants in Longview, or any place along I-20, and on her way to DFW. She's a Midwesterner and has never had real BBQ, so anything like that will be a treat for her. She'll be in Longview until Friday and flies out from DFW Friday evening. I haven't been up that way in a few years, so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Go to North Main Barbeque in Euless. This is very close to DFW airport. From hwy 183 (airport freeway) continue on west past the airport 1 or 2 exits. Exit on Main street, turn right (south).

The place is only open on Fri-Sun - it is a real experience, in my (limited) opinion the best BBQ in the DFW area.

I'd go with Hard 8 BBQ in Coppell. Close to DFW Airport and much more ambiance than North Main BBQ in Euless. North Main is a run-down joint in an old trucking company building. Hard 8 does a much better job of recreating some of the authentic TX Hill Country joints like Salt Lick or Coopers. It's expensive (priced by the pound, they'll cut as much or as little of any of the meats as you request) but a lot of fun and good atmosphere.

Take the Freeport Parkway exit north off of Highway 114 (just to the NE of DFW Airport) and head a couple miles north from there.

Disclaimer - I was very disappointed with the ribs on one of my visits to Hard 8 but every other visit has been very good so I can forgive them that one off day.

Anybody try Mr. BBQ? A couple of us did it one night after work last summer. Cheap eats and the food is better than decent.

I definitely second Main St. BBQ. It really is very good and they have quite a bit of variety in their BBQ selection (pulled pork, beef, ribs, etc.)

Main Street and Hard Eight both glso like Angelos (White Settlement Road) and Cousins (the rundown original on McCart) in Fort Worth.
