I tried Kirin Court today and wasn't very impressed. The food was marginal. The Coke was cold. The plastic sheeting for table cloths was new and not very impressive at all. I'll try it again next weekend to make sure I'm not wrong with my impressions, but I'm not gonna give it much hope.

Next time I go back home to Los Angeles, I'm hitting my usual dim sum restaurant and I'm asking the old man if he'd like to open up a restaurant in Dallas.

I'll mention it... I got food poisoning the last time I ate there. :p

My Hong Kong born friend said that Maxim's is the closest she has found to "home" in Dallas... guess I need to try it.

Food poisoning was at Arc-en-Ciel (a place I *used* to like years ago). I haven't been to Kirin Court.

Sounds like maybe we should organize one of the monthly DFW gatherings around dim sum at Maxims sometime?

I got food poisioning(so did wife) the last time I ate in venice, cairo, and istanbul. Still would go back those three.

Comprehension? Your statement doesn't make sense. I wouldn't refrain from visiting a city because I got sick there. Conversely, I *live* in the Dallas area. I will, however, refrain from visiting a restaurant where it was determined that I got ill because of food sanitation issues.

both recently did an update, so only about 5-10% of the places are closed.

I'm staying in Market Centre, have a car and am travelling alone.

I'll be mainly downtown (Sixth Floor Museum, Nasher Sculpture Centre etc).

I'd love a recommendation for breakfast (ideally nearish Market Centre - I'm an eggs and bacon, corned-beef-hash kinda guy for breakfast) and also Tex-Mex / BBQ either downtown or near Market Centre.

Oh, and one other thing which is way O/T but anyone who answers the food questions can probably answer this too and it saves starting another thread: where (near me) is the best place to go and look at / buy a GPS unit?

OK, now this has been YEARS!!!!!!! So, this is both a recommendation and a wonder if this place is still,there. The Richmond House (??) in Waxahachie. Located on a nice side street and had truly excellent dining.

Bread Winners on McKinney Ave. in Uptown (maybe five minutes away if you know where you are going.)

Tex-Mex near you: Chuy's is above average. Knox exit off 75.

BBQ - it's hit or miss at a lot of places. Dickey's is average at best but located opposite Chuy's on Henderson at 75.

GPS - Best Buy if you want brick & mortar (www.bestbuy.com)

Agree with Sam DFW above about Chuy's. People also recommend Uncle Julio's (I have eaten at both but prefer Chuy's).

Regarding breakfast, coworkers have recommend the Original Pancake House but I've never eaten there.

Gotta disagree with Sam... Breadwinners is good and a nice place for the weekend "social scene" but if you want a down home breakfast (and a location IN Market Center to boot), you want Mama's Daughters' Diner.

Wingnut you won't get much more down home Dallas than that... and those waitresses will eat your cute accent up!

As far as Tex-Mex goes, Chuys and Uncle Julios are good mainstream options where you won't go wrong. A couple more -

J. Pepe's - used to be more locations but with Dallas Tex-Mex going so "chain", the competition has been fierce. I love their stuffed fried jalepenos which in my opinion don't get much better.

I'm also very partial to El Fenix as the site of weekly childhood dinners. I don't think chips and salsa get much better than here - its low on ambiance, but high on good food for the money.
