Transiting through DFW to YYC

Hi all,

I have a flight from LHR to DFW (USA) and then onto YYC (Canada) all on 1 ticket. A couple of questions:

1. Do I need a USA ESTA to transit?
2. Do I need to collect bags at DFW or will they be through checked to YYC?

Thanks

1. Absolutely yes. There is no international connection area/route for US airports
2. Theoretically DFW should have the ITI process in place, where the bags are "specially" tagged at check-in and sent to the final destination outside US like Canada, Mexico, etc. In this case you don't have to collect and recheck them

1. Yes
2. No. DFW offers International to International (ITI) transfers. You MUST make sure that your bag is tagged ITI at LHR when checking it in - let the check-in agent know that is what you would like to do. An example ITI tag can be seen in this post. A quite handy guide produced by AA for ITI at DFW can be seen here.
