Is it possible to display images in FT posts?
When using other fora, I can type in the link to an image in photobucket and that image is then displayed. In FT all I see is the url.

No, apart from a couple of fora (trip reports, travel photography), images are disabled on FT. We are going to be conducting a trial in the future to see how more widespread use of images improves from or detracts from users' experiences, but it is on hold until we do some other improvements to the board. If you check out the TB forum, there's a very wide discussion of the issue on there from a couple of months back.

My trip report http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=842203 shows the links, which people can click on if they wish.
However, I note that other's trip reports have pictures showing. Are they directly from people's hard drives?

The photos are imported from whatever photo sharing site you use. Note the envelope icon when you compose a message or reply. That is the icon you use to insert an image using the link to your photo site. When it pops up it will say, "Please enter the URL of your image:"
