Semi-technical question

Can someone please explain the logic behind the order of the airports in each section of LocalTalk? It doesn't seem to be geographic, alphabetical by city name, alphabetical by airport code, by city size up or down, or anything else I can figure out.

(I know, if not knowing about this is my worst problem I'm in good shape, but I still can't help wondering...)

Oh, that's easy to answer. It's the order in which Johnny Cash sang the city names in his famous song, "I've been everywhere, man..."

OK, so you know the words to that song huh? Seriously, I have no idea. I think when we moved over from the other board we simply slammed them in there to get the Board live again, probably with the idea of coming back to arrange them but time being what it is (never enough) we never completed that task - though i think we did get Australia correct (actually, Oz insisted on it).

So, now that our little secret has bubbled back to the surface (can you tell we're drowning in work?) I'll see what i can do to remedy it. While I may resort to an algorithm from the TV show NUMB3RS to figure out the best way to arrange, we will come up with something.

What's you suggestion: City name or Airport code name?

City names. Not everyone knows airport codes.

Agree with city names. Even people who know airport codes don't always think in those terms - and some cities have more than one airport.

A few years ago AA's JFK monitors showed departures in alphabetical order by city name. (Maybe they still do, but it's a while since I've looked.) At the time they had just begun service to Worcester, Mass. (since discontinued). Apparently the people who set up the monitors didn't know how to spell Worcester, so they used its ORH airport code. With departures spread out over eight screens or so, that made it really hard to find!

Question asked.... action done. The only tricky one was South Florida since it's a combination of MIAm FLL, etc. but at least it's in alphabetical order and just as i thought, we simply dumped them in there except for Australia which did show signs that we had purposely arranged them.

Glad you asked and glad we could help.

Thanks Randy, they seem to be a bit better, but still not totally alphabetized. Maybe it's not complete yet?

i thought i had them all... the only questionable one was St. Louis and i used the "Saint Louis" as the determining factor for alphabet, not the abbreviation, but i could have made that error.

Thank you! ^ ^ ^

I never cease to be amazed at how responsive you folks at FT are. I wish some of the companies that get oodles of dollars from me on a regular basis were half as good that way.
