Can't click on links in chat...

Sometimes in chat folk will post a link to a thread or a url based on conversations happening in chat at the time. I'm never able to click on those links. I thought it was just me, but a few others mentioned tonight they can't click/go to those links either. Is it a bug, something we're doing - or not doing? Don't have the problem in regular forums. Links work there.

Are you leaving the initial java chat window open? That used to be the problem when people could not click on a link. I have not had any problems clicking on links but I always leave the initial java chat screen (the one that says connect) open.

This could be the answer or it may be the version of Java on your computer.

Java is a strange beast -- it's hard to know how it is going to work at any given time.

How can I check what version of Java I have? I am having the same problem with not being able to click on links in Chat.

Also, I seem to have trouble with the screen "freezing" in chat. The conversation (posts by others) continues, but my screen does not show it. Or, I post something and there is a 15-30 lag until it posts. Is it because I am using dial-up? I did try purging my cache and cookies, but still am having this problem.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to rehash such an old thread, but I am having problems with clicking links in chat on my Powerbook... whenever I click a link, Java/Firefox lock up, and I have to kill and restart Firefox. I've tried all the usual standbys (shift-click, control-click, command-click, leave browser windows open, disable all extensions, etc), and nothing seems to work.

This problem has occurred since I upgraded Firefox to 1.5 (which can use Java version 1.4.2/1.5.0). When I was using Java 1.3.1 under Firefox 1.0.x, everything worked great. I'd rather not downgrade Firefox 1.5 to use Java 1.3.1 (nor am I sure it's even possible to do).

My specifics...
Mac OS X 10.4.4
Firefox 1.5
Java version "1.4.2_09 from Apple Computer, Inc." or "1.5.0_05 from Apple Computer, Inc." (I've tried both)

I am able to get into chat and click links successfully using Safari (which is using Java 1.4.2), but Safari slooooows to a crawl after a while, so I would much rather use Firefox.

Let me know if you need anything else from me as far as debugging information, screenshots, etc.

Thanks!

Wow - I got lost on line one of MarkBach's post!

I don't have Firefox. Heck, I didn't know I had Java. I just use AOL. Anyone figure I'm out not techsavvy yet? LOL

BTW - re: leaving Java window open - I don't think I close anything. I just log in & get taken to chat. Then the only other thing I do at times is go to FT & read threads but then when I read chat & there's a link I can't click on it.

Not as detailed as Mark's post, but hope this helps...

I have been having similar problems with Firefox 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.4 as well! Digichat also tends to also "lag" on occasion (where conversations pile up, then get released in a successive barrage), though I found that resetting my DSL modem and wireless DLink router cures that problem for a while!

Just to followup, updated to OSX 10.4.6, applied the java update, and now digichat works perfectly with Safari, including the ability to click on links (where it didn't work well at all beforehand). Firefox still has the same issues as before though. So if you're on Mac OSX, digichat works fine with Safari, just make sure your software is up to date.
