Edited thread titles don't update in the listings

I wanted to change the title of a thread I started, but after I edited my message, it changed only the mini-title above my post #1, but not the thread heading at the top of the page and on the list of threads in that forum.

FlyerTalk has never (in my recollection) permitted ordinary members to edit their own thread titles. Moderators now have that ability (IIRC).

Send a PM to the moderator of the forum. They'll be able to fix it.

I didn't realize there was a character limit on posting http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=328849, and my title was cropped. I edited it, but discovered it only shows on the first post. I emailed techgirl, one of the forum moderators. She tried valiantly to match the thread title to my first post, and discovered her edits were changing my title.

Thus, I'm baffled. If I can't change the title, and the forum moderator can't change the title, who is able to do so?

I'm not sure if I understand the problem.

The overall thread title for that thread is "Fri. 7/9 LGB: US Olymp. Swim Trials w Natalie,+ dinner" and the first post's title is also "Fri. 7/9 LGB: US Olymp. Swim Trials w Natalie,+ dinner".

If I understand you correctly, you wanted your thread title changed, which techgirl did, but when she changed the thread's title, it also changed your first post's title?

Dan,

I'm also having trouble changing my own thread titles over on the Hawai'i board (e.g., found I typed a somewhat weird thread title for this thread, edited it, and the title still doesn't change on the main forum page).

There's one more data point since I posted. techgirl was unable to change the title, for the reason I gave. Ocn Vw 1K then fiddled with it til he came up with some creative abbreviations that "stuck". It's not clear why his edits worked, when techgirl's didn't - and why the abbreviations seemed to be an essential part of getting this to work.

Another data point:

The thread entitled "Mike Director" in MilesBuzz. Moderator Moderator2 changed the title to a more descriptive "Transfer Amex points to AA." The change took as the title of the original post, but not as the title of the thread.

I was able to edit the thread's title by selective abbreviation and it "took". Dan has quoted the newly-edited thread title. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, Community.

Here's some clarification on the whole editing threads thing:

When a user starts a thread, they may then edit (change) the post's title which will also change the overall thread's title... as long as they do it within 5 minutes. After that, if they change their post's title, it won't also change the thread's title.

Moderators, assigned to that particular forum, can change a user's post title by using the "Edit" button within the user's post. They cannot change the overall thread's title that way, though. If they need to change the thread's title, they can do this using the "Thread Tools" dropdown and clicking the "Edit Thread" link.

Does that clear things up? I know it's a little confusing, and we're getting used to it at this end, just as our mods are from their end...
