Anyone else starting to get twitchy watching the Notifications count increase? After a decade and a half of habitually getting my notifications to 0 first thing every visit… 😂

I ran a science experiment a few weeks ago to see how long I could ignore the Like notification. I think I ran it up to nearly three digits.

Likes are really not your friend. So I am sort of glad they are broken. Quotes on the other hand serve a practical need.

First they remove trending without telling anyone, now this "upgrade" breaks basic forum functionality like quote notifications. Seems the one size fits all ("we do this on hundreds of sites without issue!") approach has its limits.

Also, I'm confused that a critical mass of sites don't care about post quotes.

What are those sites? Why do they care about likes and not replies?

Post Quotes will be back in due course, I am sure of it! :tu:

I hope so.

Put me among the large number of FTers who *very* much want to the see the post quote function restored.

Unfortunately we'll have to wait until the numbers are properly captured.
Engagement down = less money = and this will be fixed 'hey presto'!

I am hoping it's on a monthly cycle, not quarterly.

I have run phpBB based intranet forums sites in the past, and participated in probably a dozen different internet communities using various forum software products. Can’t think of a single one that didn’t have quote notification functionality.

Agreed. How much of a conversation can you have if you don’t know when people are replying?

Antarius Jun 9, 2024 9:13 am

I understand that things break and unexpected issues happen. I would still like there to be a global sticky when things happen (or a sticky on each forum) detailing major known issues.

What was the reason for the change/update in the first place? Was it deliberate to remove the notification when quoted?

On both the mobile and desktop site, the continuous scroll remains broken. You go to the last page/post and seconds later it always bounces back two pages. You click on "view first unread" and it also may jump to your first unread post, but then quickly backtracks several posts.

The broken "like" feature remains.

Essentially it's because we HAVE to do this update to comply with PHP 8.4. I promise it's the internet that changed, we didn't choose this

In their defense, what might be happening is that they use vBulletin and modify it to some extent to add features. Then when a new PHP update comes along, those updates might brake break (thanks MatthewLAX!) whatever feature they added.

Brake or break, I need a break from FT. :p

IBJoel Jun 10, 2024 8:49 am

Likes page should be fixed today

I floated quote notifications to the Auto team and they were interested, so I'll be working with them to move that along and get them re-implemented. I think I convinced them to just work with our existing product, instead of developing their own

Thank you *like* !

Confirming the likes function is working on Safari and iOS.

IBJoel Jun 10, 2024 10:33 am

We also have a new Mentions tab in each person's user profile. You don't get a specific "notification", but if you tag someone, this can be used as something of a substitute for quote notifications for the time being

Now Fodor's is down. Tough week at IB.

ETA: It's back.

DenverBrian Jun 10, 2024 1:19 pm

Likes are working! And, NB to those still missing the quotes function: A codged workaround is to click on "My Recent Posts," which shows a listing of threads for which you have recently posted in. That's useful because if you're going to be quoted, it will likely be inside threads you have recently posted in.

Correct, but those are probably also the ones I am actively participating in and revisit when I see them having new posts (bold font) in the forum thread list. It’s really the somewhat older posts where someone follows up with a question or something that will fall through the cracks for me.

To clarify, that works if you teach people to use IBJoel style mentions in their reply - a simple traditional quote doesn’t count as a mention.

Things breaking unexpectedly does happen. When an update is rolled out without prior testing is an unforced error.

It’s a little interesting to me that the reason behind this was “compliance” with PHP 8.4, but PHP 8.4 final doesn’t get released until November. 8.4 Alpha 1 didn’t even get released until June 6. So for feature-impacting releases to be hitting prod nearly 6 months prior to GA, when the thing you’re trying to get compliant with just had its first alpha release that same day, is… interesting…

When I raised the 8.4 release date issue earlier in this thread, the reply was

Sorry, I might have gotten the version mixed up. There's been a lot of chatter in meetings I'm invited to but don't specifically involve me about 8.4. We might be trying to switch at launch. I'm not a tech person. All I know for sure is that we switched to a new PL 3 for this version of vBulletin.

How is this going? If I send a PM now, will the recipient receive an email notification as usual, or is this feature still broken? If broken, any timeline to fix it?

Are we trying to make it harder for people who post? I like to see people responding to my posts. It first showed up under the "Welcome, teddybear99", then moved to be under the bell when clicking on it. Now it's gone all together. Thankfully, I can still see subscribed threads and see them since I last posted to know if someone replied to me.

I am still receiving email notifications when I get private messages.

SPN Lifer Jun 16, 2024 8:16 pm

I received a notification via the FlyerTalk bell about a private message this morning.

notquiteaff Jun 19, 2024 4:58 pm

Is there any update or ETA when the quote notification function might return?

I did see that post, a long time ago. That’s hopefully not the current state of affairs anymore, as TWA884 pointed out.

Good question, actually. To my knowledge that's not a very popular feature, so I'll find out if that was impacted by this or if we disabled it at some earlier point

HI IBJoel,

The last alert email I got was June 6th 6pm (spain time) and the OP was 2 hours later, so I thought post hoc...

Thank you!

IluvSQ Jun 23, 2024 4:59 pm

I'm sure you have access to better data than my guesswork, but the lack of Trending plus no quotes notifications has probably reduced my time on FT by at least 50%.

:(

I also don't receive notifications when people respond to my posts.
