Problem with portrait images

Having a problem with a post that has some portrait-oriented images. They are being cropped to landscape shape (and thus the top and bottom ~25% is missing). They look fine on my computer (Windows 10). Uploading with Chrome.

Let’s see if this is a problem for iPad and iOS... Nope. Portrait uploaded with “Manage Attachments” works. Let’s see what Tech says.

Working well for me too.

Possible your pics are very large?

What method are you using to upload them?

I re-sized them down with an image resizer (not sure if it's native Windows 10 or some type of add-in). They're all ~60Kb (down from a typical ~2Mb iPhone pic) so shouldn't be big. They look fine in Windows. I uploaded them through "Go Advanced" on the regular FT in Chrome. I'll try to re-post one here from my iPhone directly, to see if that does anything differently.

Testing. Looks like it’s still getting cut off.

here’s a screen shot of what the full (resized) image looks like on my iPhone.
Clearly something is wrong...

OK I figured this out.

There is an issue with the EXIF data on some photo files. When I download your pics to a photo viewer, they show up rotated on their side. When I simply upload them to FT, they show up correctly oriented but with the top cut off.

If you look at the exif data for this photo it says it's from iphone 6, and the width is 640 pixels and the height is 480. So as far as the metadata, this is a landscape photo, so FT uploads it as such, which cuts off the top.

If you strip out the metadata (nto sure how to do that, probably requires a 3rd party app), it should upload correctly to FT.

Hmm.
Thanks for that. I think I have a viewer that lets me change some of the metadata (like the timestamp of the photo - when I forget to change the time zone on my point-and-shoot). So I'll either try that, or maybe I'll try another method to resize/shrink the pictures (it was probably my resizer that messed it up) -- any recommendations there? Obviously the original iPhone photos would show up really large on FT...

No recommendation, i'm sorry. You may have to do some experimenting.

I would recommend you to ask such questions in our Travel Photography Forum since now you've identified the issue. Folks over there should have better suggestions. This master thread might be a good start:

How (and where) to embed your pictures in the Travel Photography forum
