I actually don't mind infinite scroll (and you know me; I can't stand people who complain just because their cheese got moved :P) but there are a couple of annoyances with the refresh that I hope can be designed around:

1) It's rather difficult to get up to the wiki with infinite scroll, because when you scroll up, more page content gets loaded, so you never quite make it to the top. It seems that sort of forcefully rocketing to the very top of the page before new content can load will make it stick, but it's still poor UI and severely compromises the wiki product.
2) The new quick reply window is a little touchy. I've accidentally clicked outside (above) the box and lost several paragraphs of composed text. It also doesn't work with Multi-Quote, and the UI for making Multi-Quote work is not obvious (I think you actually have to scroll to the top of the page--not easy with infinite scroll--and click the Post Reply button up there).

Let me know if you're not able to replicate and I can post some screenshots or video walkthroughs or something.

1. You COULD use the FIRST/LAST page link to get to the top immediately, although that will change your page as well. Yes, there is no TOP button, which I think is what you're after?
2. A. losing text: when I accidentally click outside the box, all I do is click Quick Reply again and my text is there. B. Quick Reply has never worked with multiquote; you must hit Reply. There is a Reply button on the IS rolling menu bar at the bottom.

Ah; I didn't notice the footer. It's quite a bit less bold than the 2005-era design of the rest of the site. :P

You're right about Quick Reply coming back with text in it.

As for the Wiki...I don't know what the solution is, but somehow it needs to be easier to get to the wiki. I don't know if a Top button necessarily is or isn't the solution; perhaps a mini two-line preview of the wiki needs to be displayed at the bottom of the header, or maybe there needs to be a "go to wiki" button in the footer nav bar, or whatever, but it's not particularly intuitive right now.

On a usual page, with 2 sets of banner ads and lots of white space, there's only room to see one actual message before having to scroll down. That's bad enough, but sometimes the combination of wrapping title (totally unnecessary -- it should go above the right column ad), wikipost (5x as much whitespace as necessary) and wrapping of the page selector mean that there's no actual message data without scrolling down.

In particular, the post reply/page selector line should never be allowed to wrap.

Quote button not bringing forward previous text in quote tags

When I select Quote, I now get a Reply to Thread screen that is blank, without the quoted text with quote tags around it.

IE 11.1804.14393.0

Do the same in Chrome and it works correctly.

Chrome 63.0.3239.132

Hmm seems to work ok here. Maybe try clearing your cache and turning off any ad blockers on IE.

I've found that just in the past week, FT becomes unresponsive when I navigate the site using desktop Safari on Mac OS. I'm running Safari 11.0.3 on Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3. The problem is always the same: I'm browsing as usual, but upon clicking some link -- it's always seemingly random which link triggers it -- the mouse pointer becomes the colored pinwheel and all links on the page become unclickable.

Safari itself isn't affected, and I can still close the tab as usual, so it's only an inconvenience at present. But the problems pops back up within a few minutes of visiting FT.

I'm confident it isn't just my setup, as it happens on two different machines running Mac OS, and I've cleared my entire history, cookies, and cache on both browsers. The clincher is that it also just started occurring on another forum I visit that uses the same bulletin board software.

Any other similar reports?

RandomBaritone Feb 10, 2018 4:29 pm

Further to my post of February 7, I've given up on Safari and switched to Firefox when visiting FT.

Happy to help troubleshoot if you think you can fix the problem with Safari though. I haven't noticed issues with any other sites except for another forum that also runs on vBulletin.

Be sure to clear cache and turn off ad blockers.

I am having the problem listed above with the site freezing, but I'm using Chrome on a Mac. I cleared every single cookie, and I do not have an ad blocker running. Since I cleared the cookies, I can't even log into the site because it's completely unresponsive. It shut down Chrome earlier, but I managed to close the one tab this last time.

It seems to be waiting on two things to load. They both have ad in their name, but one is something like adnexus or something similar. I couldn't screen shot it because of the hanging issue. I'm currently on the same computer, using Safari which doesn't seem to be having the same issue. Hopefully.

ETA: I just had the same issue with Safari, but at least I was able to do a force reload on the page. It is clearly something related to ads loading.

I still have that one trying to load in one of my open tabs: secure.adnxs.com.

Yup. Forums are currently unusable for me in Safari and Chrome, looks like secure.adnxs.com is the culprit.

Contrary to admin advice, I wasn't using any ad blocker, but installing one made the site usable again.

I don't have adblocker and it still took 10+ min for this page to load. using chrome and its the adnxs virus causing the problems.

Yup. I've never used an ad blocker before, but the ads on FT have become so intrusive today that I can't even use the damn site.

So now I have an ad blocker.

Well done FT.

p.s. I've been finding a lot of ads auto-playing audio in the past while too

aquamarinesteph Feb 12, 2018 11:11 pm

I finally managed a shot with my phone.

'Waiting for secure.adnxs.com...'

and

'Waiting for adserver-us.adtech.advertising.com...'

I will probably be able to make this post before it freezes again. That's in Safari. It's useless in Chrome.

As I mentioned in my first post on the topic, I’ve cleared my cache on both browsers. I work in digital content myself, so I’ve never used an ad-blocker. I do find it a bit curious, though, that your immediate advice is to remove an ad-blocker despite several reports of success in eliminating the problem ... by using an ad-blocker.

Also, in addition to Safari being unusable, I can confirm what others have reported: Chrome doesn’t work either. In fact if anything, the symptom is worse; whereas only the tab containing FT crashes when using Safari, browsing FT on Chrome causes the entire browser to freeze, requiring a force-quit. Even Firefox for desktop is affected: the page never completes loading, so it’s impossible to post messages.

The only device I have that allows me to visit FT is my iPad Pro running iOS 11.2.5.

I concur with others that the problem appears to be a rogue ad containing either malformed or malicious JavaScript being served to desktop platforms.

Yup, site is unusable now. maxes out cpu usage and massive memory usage as well Its not your browser or cache... I have the same issue across multiple computers and browsers. Just trying to navigate and load a page takes minutes, if it recovers and loads at all.

I've found I can navigate the site using the latest version of Firefox, though I often can't post messages, as the interface never fully loads. But still, better than nothing.

dave_261 Feb 13, 2018 7:08 am

Same here. Each page taking about 3 minutes to load in chrome, with the 'waiting for secure.adnxs.com' note at the bottom of the screen. Unbearable.

I did read that Chrome will release a new version on Feb 15 (Thursday) with an integrated ad blocker...

NOTE: I downloaded Chrome Ad Block....... and solved problem instantly.

rylan Feb 13, 2018 8:39 am

And during this time network activity spikes as well... sustained transfer for 60 seconds on the order of 30-40 MB data received, and also about 10MB sent.
... is transferring and requesting that much data?

IluvSQ Feb 13, 2018 8:58 am

I'm finding the site unusable since last night, both in Firefox with Adblocker, and I.E. without one.
Adblocker is telling me it is stopping hundreds of items per minute.

These platform recommendations are all over the map. Perhaps it's not a browser-specific issue, but rather related to some extremely buggy JavaScript -- either in an ad or elsewhere -- that no browser can parse 100% of the time.

Boggie Dog Feb 13, 2018 9:37 am

Last 18 to 24 hours FT is unusable. Pages won't load, or load very slowly. Not sure what the owners of FT are trying to accomplish but if it is to alienate ( can't use the words I would like to use) users then they are doing an outstanding job.

Not even an acknowledgement that there might be a problem.

IBJoel Feb 13, 2018 9:43 am

Hi guys, I've alerted our Ad Ops, and they're working on a fix (they were able to immediately reproduce it). "Adnxs" is probably what a lot of you are seeing.

Maglev Feb 13, 2018 12:21 pm

I have the "adnxs" problem on my Mac, but am now on my wife's Dell and able to log on. I wasn't going to post here and was just going to respond by "liking" posts, but the "Like" button is not working on this computer.

The irony ;) :D

Luckily I've not experienced it, but there's probably a good reason for that. Glad to hear IB was able to replicate it/hope they get it sorted soon.

Cheers.

It just took me 30 minutes to post this complaint. Flyertalk continuously and repeatedly crashes Safari. I am so out of here until you fix it. Absolutely unusable.

Nope. Took 30 seconds afterwards to crash.

Only shortly. Looks terrible on a 12" iPad and a total waste of that large expensive display. I think it's certain ad's that cause the crash. I think FT should be more discerning on the type of ad's allowed. Did you think of charging a small amount for users to avoid ad's completely? I understand you need to finance the site but the way it is at present is unbearable.

Just thought I'd report a bug I noticed earlier today whilst posting on FT.

Symptom : Uploaded image does not appear in Quick Reply window and instead appears in the full reply form seen in the background.

Steps to Reproduce:

1) Click the Quick Reply button on a thread whilst the reply form at the bottom of the thread appears on screen.
2) Type a message into the Quick Reply form
3) Click the insert image button on the Quick Reply form

Expected Result: Image appears inline to the message you have just typed in the Quick Reply form.
Actual Result : Image appears in thread in the background:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fa04611eb9.png

Environment :
  • OS: Mac OS X 10.13.6
  • Browser : Safari 11.1.2 (13605.3.8)
  • Device : 2012 Mac mini with 2 displays attached (HDMI and Thunderbolt)
Hope that provides some insights.
