Well, I suspect that tomorrow, Chrome will automatically start blocking a lot of FT's ads (https://blog.chromium.org/2018/02/ho...ing-works.html), so they've got bigger issues now.

Phil Level Mar 6, 2018 8:05 pm

I'm also reporting that FT under FireFox 58.0.2 under Win 10 is using almost 6 GB or memory. As soon as I close the FT tab, memory usage returns to normal.

I enabled Ad Block Plus for FT and that seems to keep RAM usage at normal levels.

exactabox Mar 12, 2018 7:23 pm

After finding FT nearly impossible to view, due to extremely high resource usage, with Chrome and Firefox, I decided to try the Opera browser. This is freshly installed, and the only tabs open are from FT. The results were a bit ironic...

I run Windows 7 64-bit with 8gb RAM. I do not use ad-blockers (including the one built into Opera), my philosophy is that I can deal with most ads, it's a small price to pay for a (mostly) free internet. But I have never seen any site -- and that includes clickbait garbage sites -- that immediately just run the CPU at nearly 100% and halt my computer, so quickly and consistently as FT.

This is likely ad-related; we are going to try some steps today to prove or disprove that.

If you have been experiencing this issue, please let us know if it is still occurring as of this post -- we believe we've managed to turn it off.

Thank you,

Paul

Just saw this and will report back if I'm seeing the CPU issue again.

EDIT: So I've been trying the site without any "workarounds" the last couple of weeks and the issue appears to be resolved. Thanks for taking this feedback seriously and fixing the issue. ^

cerps343 Apr 7, 2018 12:16 pm

I don't know if anyone else is still noticing the issue but I am seeing in Safari the notice "This web page has been reloaded because it was consuming significant memory" multiple times. I have a 15" 2017MBP with 16GB RAM and when I have 5 FT tabs open, the computer gets noticeably hot. I did not notice this issue with the old theme. This only seems to have occurred after the style was updated.

Tech1 Apr 18, 2018 1:41 pm

This is definitely still an issue - almost an immediate ramp to over 2GB ram used in Chrome and then i tried on IE and swiftly went over 1GB. In both cases, brings the whole system to a standstill.

windows 7
Chrome 65.0.3325.181 (Official Build) (64-bit)
IE Version 1.0.9600.18952
Hope this helps, but it's unusable for me at the moment.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this slowdown, and it happens in all browsers. Even when I write a short post, just one character at a time appears on the screen, as if another ad is loading between each keystroke. I have reverted to writing my replies in a word processor, and then pasting them into FT.

florens Apr 24, 2018 12:12 pm

Same here! (Chrome, Windows 10).

COSPILOT Apr 24, 2018 2:20 pm

FT is like the Deathstar for my computer. Kills every browser, and consumes resources faster than a stripper takes my money at Sapphires in Vegas. Internet Brands hasn't responded to any comments I've made directly with them, crap company IMO. And I just realized headquarters is in my territory, maybe I will pay a visit and ask what is up in person.

rylan Apr 25, 2018 6:33 am

Continues to be an ongoing issue. Doesn't matter what browser or computer. I'm on an ultra high end system and its killing my browser and pegging 2 of my cpu cores, along with network traffic. Can barely even type this as letters show up seconds after I type.

Is anyone here running A*Block?

I am, because it solved the problem.

I even have "Allow some non-intrusive advertising" enabled, because I have nothing against ads on sites I use. Heck, I even have google.com on my whitelist because their ads are so tame.

I want to support FT, but not at the cost of all my RAM and CPU.

cerps343 May 14, 2018 3:44 am

No, I do not run any form of ad blockers. Is there any update to this? My computer gets ridiculously hot when I have FT tabs open and it is making me visit FT less and less...

The best thing to do is clear your cache. Sometimes that will do the trick.

rylan May 17, 2018 9:14 am

Still the same insane cpu usage... and its coming from those video ads in the middle of the thread pages that load up with anywhere from 16 to 21 short video advertisements and generate a lot of network traffic and absurd cpu utilization.

Hence the reason I am visiting and participating in FT significantly less than I used to. Don't have the time or patience to try to scroll through threads and reply when it locks up my browser and computer.

cerps343 Sep 2, 2018 3:05 pm

Anyone else still having this issue? On all of my FT tabs I have open, I get the following message:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d58696f266.png

To recap this is on a 15" 2017 MBP with 16GB RAM using Safari and only the Instapaper extension

Any time I visit FT without full adblocker protection on, the CPU usage absolutely demolishes my MBP and grinds any browser I'm using to a halt (Chrome and Safari especially). Did it recently to test the broken trending threads issue and I couldn't even get FT to fully render a single page on Chrome.

Thus, I don't come near FT without adblockers on.

Having precisely the same problem using both Safari and Chrome for Mac OS. As someone who has developed and managed website for 20 years, I'm kind of mystified that IB allows what are essentially malicious ads to ruin the user experience for visitors. Like several posters above, I've basically stopped coming to FT because of the issue. Because I've worked in the industry I'm opposed to ad blockers, but in this case I might have to try installing one.

But surely someone in authority has the ability to rein in some of these improperly coded ads? This isn't about users trying to put one over on you, but rather that FT is literally crashing our computers.

We do do that. When we receive a report of a malicious ad, we report to ad ops. Then they speak with the ad network and have them remove it. Then another ad (possibly from another ad network) come along and the process must repeat.

Have you tried using ad networks that don't allow malicious ads in the first place? This is literally the only site I visit that has this problem.

We partner with ad networks that provide content most relevant to our users.

cerps343 Sep 6, 2018 3:38 pm

I count anywhere from four to five ads on this thread view alone. Is there any way one of them at a time can be removed in a dev environment to see if one of them is troublesome and causing intense resource usage due to an error in coding or some other reason? Just a thought.

I really don't believe the problem is malicious ads at this point, but rather something wrong with the way the ads are being rendered on the site itself. When I was testing the trending threads directory issue with/without ad blocker and with/without being logged in, there was a huge difference in the way the site rendered while logged in with ad blockers off. Chrome being the browser with the worst issues, I was never able to fully render a single FT page using Chrome with no ad blocker while being logged in, the loading icon just spun for eternity.

My guess is that at least one of the ads from the current ad network has a compatibility issue with the site and Chrome is trying to render it endlessly, causing a huge CPU spike, even though the actual content of the page fully loads and renders. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to possibly isolate a problematic ad or a potential coding compatibility issue from the user side so I don't think I'll be able to help there like I could isolating the trending threads directory problem.
