Change to some ad behavior as of today, 17 Mar 2017

The (two) vertical ads on the right side of the page will go from being static placement to scrolling alongside the user's actions; the ads will essentially SLIDE on down the page as though stuck to the right edge of the browser.

This should be enabled today.

Thanks all,

Paul

I'm so glad you spent your time making sure ads are MORE pervasive, while the disruptive ad thread continues to accumulate reports that are unaddressed weeks/months later.

I have to agree. Ads are ok, this is a free site supported by users. Intrusive ads are not welcome.

Yeah. Additionally, they add to page load time as well. Which makes me hate these even more.

Translation: we want to make ads more "in your face" than they were before. How is that a good thing (though, to be fair, you never said that it is supposed to be)?

It's just a heads-up that some ads will behave differently than before, before anyone thought is was a glitch. Thanks all.

A gentle reminder: The usual FlyerTalk Rules apply in this forum, even the bits about "12.1 Friendly, Respectful and Welcoming" and "12.2 Avoid Getting Personal".

While a degree of frustration over the disruptive ads and malware-implanting rogue ads is understandable, and is acceptable to share here as legitimate feedback, Admin and Tech have been working to address these issues as best they can with the resources they have. Let's keep offering feedback, and refrain from posting opinions as unsupported accusations or fact.

Thank you,

JDiver & cblaisd, Technical Support and Feedback forum moderation team

Thank you guys.

Look. We understand the frustrations that are being expressed about the ads. It would help if you better understood who you are talking to when you express them.

I'm the Community Manager for FT. I am not a policy maker, nor am I a technician. Those people do not come here. I do. IBjoel, my assistant, does. Volunteer moderators like JDiver and cblaisd do.

We all work to ensure that reported bugs are sent up the chain to the people who can actually fix them.

We also work to pass along the community's feelings and suggestions about ads and features, to the people who make those decisions.

All in all, I think we do a pretty good job of striking a balance between business needs and community needs. At no time do either of those things completely eclipse the other. At any given time, both are being worked on internally.

Please be patient and please be polite, and remember that the people upon whom you depend to relay your concerns to the people who can alleviate them are the same ones you have the ability to be polite to, or nasty to.

Thank you,

Paul

I hope that people will be allowed to politely share their frustration, without being shut down. We need to give feedback.

Feedback is both always welcome and one of the two primary functions of this forum. Feedback is necessary to attempt to adequately address the many issues that are brought forward here - spam attacks, ads hijacking browsers, various technical issues, etc. We do appreciate and value your civil and polite feedback.

As other fora, we do adhere to the FlyerTalk Rules, so unfettered snark or the like will not be considered legitimate feedback and will be addressed with summary deletion etc.

Paul,

Actions are everything. Patience wears thin when the same ads are reported over and over in the main thread and the exact same ones are still live a month and a half later... and the optics are not improved when enhancements to make ads more pervasive are simultaneously launched. Nobody expects to not see ads on an ad-supported website. Yet it's in IB's own best interests to ensure a tolerable advertising experience... otherwise your users will take actions themselves. Of all the options available, technical or otherwise (i.e. simply not visiting the site), they all have one thing in common: a loss of ad revenue. To walk a mile in the shoes of your users, I suggest browsing and posting only from the mobile version of the site on an iPhone for a week or two. Perhaps this will provide you with some helpful insights to pass along.

I appreciate this thoughtful and rational note, and I don't disagree with anything in it. Rest assured, however, that the issues being described are well understood and have been reported to the parties who can make such changes. Ad issues are difficult to address sometimes, and it is inevitable that some will continue over a long period of time. I wish there was more I could do, because I know exactly how frustrating the user experience can be. Please bear with us.
