Does anyone actually have any idea why this keeps happening? Are the technical support people actually doing anything to fix the problem? Is the software this board runs on just a piece of crap?

Me 2 (or rather 700 and something )

Seriously, though, has vBulletin been considered as software? It is used at www.tivocommunity.com that is about the same size and never experiences trouble like this. They used to use ubb, but changed. You can talk to David Bott who runs the whole thing (base forums are at www.avsforums.com, of which tivocommunity.com is a sub-board)

Been back for a few hours. Last time (a few days back) it came back on at midnight. This time in the wee hours. Either FT staff work some amazing overtime, or it is a funrtion of less user demand on the boards I'd assume by these 2 instances?

1. Not a conclusive one.

2. Yes.

3. For something this large, yes...

We did look at vbulletin last year, and I can't remember what it was that we didn't like about it, so we may check it out again. Actually we've been looking at phpbb for a while, and now that the 2.0 version is out of beta, we may mess with that...

But wouldn't Infopop's UBB Threads be better? It would be almost the only way to keep all your users and posts. It offers favourite threads (a My Home feature), full moderation and post approval and is based on PHP/MySQL instead of flat HTML like UBB 5.47.
