Netscape Hanging
I use Netscape 4.73 running on NT Workstation. Recently I have been running into a problem that only happens on Webflyer.
I will get the following error displayed just below the tabs on the top section of the site http://ad-adex3.flycast.com/server/j...t2.htm;/509129 This is followed by some text that says The following errors were encountered: Connection Failed The System Returned: Connection Refused I can do nothing else on the site when this happens. I can enter a new url and go to another site but am unable to click on any links on these sites. As an example, on quote.yahoo.com I can enter a ticker but cannot click to get the quote. When I close Netscape and restart it the problem remains. After closing Netscape I Crl-Alt-Del and view the task manager, I see netscape still running although it is not visible on the screen or taskbar. If I kill the process I can then restart Netscape and browse until your site causes the same problem. Any thoughts? TW |
TW -- I'm running Netscape 4.75 on Win98. Same problem as you experience, and it started just a few days ago. By turning off Java and Java Script I can "snap it out of it", then close Netscape, then restart Netscape, recheck Java and Java Script. Weird...

the same things, since I upgraded to Netscape version 4.75 Macintosh last week happens now to me, always when FlyerTalk automatically starts a java script.
|
I have been running this version of Netscape for a couple of months. The problem just started. My guess is that the problem is with whatever code flycast.com is running??
I hope it gets fixed soon. TW |
Anyone going to look into this?
Thanks TW |
the culpright seems to be the js-adex3.flycast.com server (at least, if Netscape doesn't hang up completly, but 'just let's me wait for some 5 minutes, I sometimes get the error message that Netscape couldn't find that server ...). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I know from some recent exploration that WebFlyer has had several upgrades lately - in my case, using IE, I'm experiencing no pblms on the regular BB, but have lost all sounds and even the tab for sound options in the chat room. You may be interested in the other thread re: sounds in this section. It's a Java handling pblm in both cases, I think.

Yes, I've noticed this on both NT and 98. I'll click a link and nothing will happen for several seconds, or maybe not at all. Then I pretty much have to shut down Netscape with the Task Manager and try again or give up.

It seems like I have just a few minutes, maybe five, before this happens and causes me to have to restart Netscape.
To say it plainly, this sucks big-time. |
Add me to the list of unhappy Netscape browser users. I switched over to Internet Explorer and cleaned out my cache to see if that would help, so far I'm not having any problems. It's interesting to hear that other people attribute this to a java problem between FT's server and their browser.

It is definitely a Netscape problem...
IE should work unaffected...at least it has for me. Continual problems with Netscape. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Me too I am afraid, although my main problem sounds a little different. I either find that Netscape crashes completely, or I can't directly click on any links. However, I am still able to 'open link in new window' using a right mouse button click.

Cue for FT administrator from infopop's tech support bb:
"Some of your pages and links work fine with Netscape 4.73, but some hang up. When it works in IE, but not in Netscape, it usually means you have some code errors in the HTML you added. IE is very tolerant, but NS will choke if there are any unclosed table tags or other HTML errors. I am not fluent in JavaScript, but there could be errors there, also." Apparently fixing a rogue tag fixed the problem for another infopop user.. worth a look for our netscape friends.. IE works fine in the BB - it's only in the chat room where there are pblms and those are java problems..which mysteriously were 'fixed' late last night but not working again this morning! I'm also having the same problem, usually when I'm near the bottom of the airlines' boards. Using Netscape, my system suddenly locks, and will not let me click on anything else. I have to log off-default- to get it to restart. Hasn't yet happened on any other website.

I'm having major problems both at work (NT using Netscape 4.?) and at home (Mac 8.5.1 and Netscape 4.5). At work I have the same problem above with being able to go to various sites after the problem occurs but clinking on any links does nothing. I have to completely reboot my computer. At home on my slow but lovable Mac everything is fine until Java starts. I then get obscure remarks on the bottom of my browser like "Applet HP AlogrithmBanner started" and "Applet Transitionsenor started"!!! Then my Mac either crashes or the cursor goes to the graping hand cursor. I'm sure that this is all connected to the advertising links but this needs to stop. What was wrong with the old method? Or can we go to a different ad server? Much more of this and I'm going to have to consider stop visiting this site which is my favorite on the internet.
