Just thought I'd bring this one up again. I have had problems with this ever since the this thread has been going on? What about the others here?
It's been said that it's a Netscape problem, but, after all, about 50% of people use Netscape. |
"It's been said that it's a Netscape problem, but, after all, about 50% of people use Netscape."
Absolutely NO way! Maybe 4 years ago! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
I am sooooooo ashamed of myself. but now I must admit (sorry baobab): I switched a week ago from Netscape 4.72 (Mac-version) to MS Explorer 5.04 (Mac-version) ... only because my Netscape Communicator starts hanging in Flyertalk after a short time and I had to restart Netscape again and again.
|
Indeed, shame on you, Rudi. Anyone at FlyerTalk ever look at this issue?
|
Sorry to say that Netscape and FT still don't seem compatible on my computer either. I tried Netscape again today and still find that at a certain point it inevitably ends up hanging. Any comments from our webmaster?
|
I also have problems with FT, and more recently, since I upgraded to Netscape 4.75 on Mac OS 9.04. I upgraded hoping that would help, but if anything my problems have been worse. And I'm NOT going over to the dark side...forget MS IE!

In defense of our FT technical friends:
I've taken a look around the "problems post installation" boards on infopop - the providers of Ultimate Bulletin Board. Their moderator responses are harsh, rude, and frequently downright insulting.. and the people posting are their customers! It's no wonder FT is having some difficulty in getting straight-up help. I will add that one reason I was there was to evaluate their product for commercial purposes within my company's service. Based on the apparent attitude there, I am no longer considering them. According to the answers I've found there regarding some of your Netscape problems, which include "we have no problems with Netscape.. it's your problem", it appears there can be a number of reasons why FT may be having this problem.. one of them I posted earlier in this thread. I think the short answer is switch to IE! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif [This message has been edited by svpii (edited 10-13-2000).] |
... well, sad yes, I am now 'with the enemy': IE Explorer 5.02 (Mac verman version).
The Mac OS system 8 (on my Performa at home), 9 on my Mac in the office and 9 too on my i-book all shared the same Netscape-'hanging' problem and I had to restart Netscape when surfing on FlyerTalk in average every 15 minutes before. No problem now. But please do give me my Netscape back by correcting the problems |
Michael,
I think I might have a threory on some problems folks are having with browser crashes (mainly Netscape). Bare with me. First, the pop ad at the bottom of a typical FlyerTalk page that now has the annoying sound file. I got it again today. It is an ad for "netstocks.com." It is NOT a normal animated GIF. I went to right click on the ad to get the URL for you, and instead of getting the usual properties window, I got a "FlashPlayer4" control panel. So, my theory is that if visitors don't have the FlashPlayer4 plug-in in their browser, it is causing it to freeze or crash. That's my theory. Whatever it is it's annonying as heck! |
Once in a while, Netscape hangs while loading a new page of FlyerTalk. It displays the top two frames correctly but the bottom frame which displays the actual FT content, is blank and Netscape is frozen at "97 bytes read".
Just as with all the other Netscape problems pointed out in this thread, you know that at this point, Netscape is toast. If you close Netscape and restart it, the problem persists. The problem is that Netscape doesn't close properly and you have to manually kill the process. Win95/98: 1. Close Netscape 2. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Close Program dialog box. 3. Select "Netscape" and click "End Task" 4. You may need to repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times until... 5. The "This program is not responding..." dialog box pops up at which time you can click "End Task" again to kill the process for good. 6. You should be able to restart Netscape and things should work fine again with FT. For WinNT/2000: 1. Close Netscape. 2. Bring up the Task Manager and kill the netscape.exe process. (Ctrl-Alt-Del and select "Task Manager") 3. You should be able to restart Netscape without trouble. These procedures let you shut down Netscape cleanly and restart it (i.e. I'm simply providing a workaround solution), but don't really address the underlying issues with Java etc. I hope this is of use to people with similar problems with Netscape. FewMiles.. |
Thanks for the information, fewmiles - I've been having the same problem, and could only get active again by re-booting the computer...which also required re-connecting to my ISP, restarting Netscape...I could fix dinner during the time all this took. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
Hopefully with these ideas I'll be using a different smilie in the future! |
for Mac versions of Netscape [*]once you hang, you don't have to leave Netscape[*]open preferences (Netcape)[*]go to advanced[*]disable java script[*]reclick the page you wanted to open[*]before closing Netscape for your day's browsing session, enable java script again (to be fully functionable for the next session again).

Rudi's solution works on PCs as well. A life-saver!

Good morning everybody. Thank you all very much for the cooperation amongst yourselves and us...your careing for one another is always so inspiring...I can't imagine a nicer group of people.
This is primarily to let you know that I'm aware of the problems with Netscape and have been in contact with InfoPop about them and they assure me that they are on it. Hopefully they'll have a good solution very soon. They seemed a little reluctant to broach the subject initially but they seem more responsive these days. Keep the feedback coming and I'll keep on top of this particular problem and hopefully all will be well soon. ------------------ ThanX...
