It actually cleans all FT threads, and takes 2 days to complete... so it should be done sometime tomorrow ;)

All that's lacking is for the problem to manifest itself in this thread.

I was having issues with the clean-up process and the script is still running, I will update when the process completes. Thanks, sorry for the inconvenience.

Basic cleanup script reported that it ran successfully and fixed the pagination; I spot-checked threads reported in this report and they seemed to be working for me. Please update if the issue persists and we'll continue the cleanup process. Thank you.

As Mike may have explained at one time or another, while the periodic running of the cleanup script can alleviate the page count issues as they occur, the root cause is not fixable. It's a core software functionality and can't be addressed at this time. We know what's causing it, and it would require a huge development effort for something that is essentially a minor, periodic annoyance. We'd much rather spend that time developing the new site features we're working on instead.
We're sorry for the inconvenience, and will certainly continue to use the "workaround" script to try to keep up with this issue. Paul |

You don't say what the actual cause is, so I'm going to guess it has to do with mods making changes to threads (by deleting or merging posts) that mangle a pointer into an array. If that's the problem, maybe clueing in the mod corps (and telling them how to minimize the damage on the back end by avoiding certain actions) would be a good start. I get the fact that this is IB's candy store, and you guys can run it as you see fit. But please don't insult the intelligence of the user base by telling us that a longstanding problem (which IMO has gotten much worse over the past year or two, and which has prompted more than a few of us to come here & express exasperation in this very thread) is trifling. I beg to differ. |

IMO, this problem is neither minor nor periodic. It happens All. The. Time. in various threads I read, and makes it cumbersome to do something very, very basic, i.e., "view first unread post."

I beg to differ. Unfortunately there is no way for mods to mitigate it. We do our best to minimize, by programming the cleanup script to run as often as possible. I wish we could do more, but at this time, this is where we are. |

I do understand that it can make things a bit more difficult, but it truly is for a very small number of users. Most people who remark on it at all are under the impression that there are posts they can't read on the phantom page, which is not true.

Thread indicates two additional pages beyond last post
In the Hyatt forum, there's an active thread about domestic Hyatts no longer providing toothpaste (not quite the exact title, but awfully close). I do 15 posts per page, so that the last post #222 is on page 15, but the top and bottom of thread indicate that I can click to see page 16 or 17. Of course, doing so just sends me to page 15.
Why does this happen? I would be very surprised if more than fifteen posts in this thread had been deleted for some reason. |
It's a VB glitch. There's no content on those pages.

A glitch or related to this lengthy discussion?

It's exactly that.
