It works! It works!

Ever since the email system was, er, upgraded last year I had no daily summaries but suddenly they started again on approx 19 January.

Whatever the techs are smoking these days - keep at it :D^

stimpy Jan 23, 2012 12:36 pm

And no forum updates emails today. :( Well it was nice while it lasted?

IBobi Jan 23, 2012 12:40 pm

Don't despair!

The updates from last week were caused by Mike (ibxanders) manually "goosing" the daily digest system while he investigates the issue.

There's been forward progress and we understand the parameters of the problem better. Please stay tuned and as always, we thank you for your patience.

Thanks admins!

Another one hit wonder. Nothing since then.

SFO 1K Jan 30, 2012 6:50 pm

Even my thread updates have become spotty in the past week. I'll visit the site, but I still don't get updates to threads that are getting new posts.

Discus Feb 13, 2012 9:24 am

So, how are we doing on this issue?

IBobi Feb 13, 2012 11:11 am

Just received an update from Mike on this. He's in the midst of a fairly technically involved plan that could root out the cause of the email malfunction and perhaps fix it at the same time.

We don't have an ETA yet but I'll post it as soon as I do.

It will be nice when this finally get fixed. Have been keeping my fingers crossed for the past 17 months :(

yorkz80 Mar 3, 2012 10:37 am

Seriously, any update? Perhaps IB doesn't care if this ever gets fixed. The lack of progress is abysmal!

Nail on Head, York.

This thread goes back to Aug 2010 - yes,18 months. It would be interesting to know by how much site traffic is down?

Or maybe that's the point. Only we old moaners use email now so...

T8191 Mar 5, 2012 10:15 am

Two years in, and never had one. Only just discovered such things existed from a comment on a Thread. Hmmmm ....

Ahhh ... I use a silent email account. I must amend that to one I actually look at!!

[Done ...]

KhalilSheikh Mar 5, 2012 9:33 pm

FT is broken. Let's just admit it.

It's a free website and I've benefited immensely from the knowledge I gained here, and for that I'm grateful.

IBobi Mar 6, 2012 1:08 pm

We continue to work on the email issue.

Ibobi,

This issue has been ongoing for several months and I think most of the members either adopted other futures of Flyertalk or just migrated their postings elsewhere. If it is not fixed now, I would not spend my resources on this future. I have not been receiving my updates for months and I just became less frequent guest on Flyertalk secondary now I need to look for the info instead of info was emailed to me daily,

I agree. While I still participate, Flyertalk admins have not shown any willingness to solve this issue. Consequently I'm active on more blogs and competitors now.

T8191 Mar 8, 2012 12:29 pm

I say, chaps, there's no need to stamp your feet and walk away.

What are you losing by this e-mail that I have never had, never missed and possibly don't need filling my in-box anyway?

Paraphrasing something that's common on the BA Board ... "I will never use this website again".

yorkz80 Mar 9, 2012 4:32 am

Different people use FT for different reasons. While I admire those FTers who are able to actively monitor and post on multiple forums/threads, my time to dedicate to FT on a daily basis is limited. So receiving the information that I find valuable from various forums in my e-mail box every day is a very convenient way for me to stay in-touch with the flow of information that is most important to me. If I don't get these e-mails on a daily basis (which take me directly to the forums I'm interested in) then I'm unlikely to visit FT regularly, if at all.

I could probably find various work-arounds using some of the other functionality on FT to access at least some of the information I want, but that's not really the point. The real issue is that IB has many other websites to manage and this issue is clearly low on their priority list… so they occasionally dabble with the issue to give us the impression that they are “actively” working on it, but not really. The ineptitude of the IB tech team and general disregard for prioritizing this problem is the real issue. Moreover, it also gives us a good example of how certain websites are driven by specific personalities (i.e. Randy) that are passionate about the purpose of a website and less concerned with the business/money making side of things and trying to figure out how to create synergies across their portfolio of websites.

The information and knowledge on FT is unmatched - at least for now - but websites like this either evolve or die. Since IB took over FT it seems to be the latter.

I’m moving to milepoint – let’s hope IB doesn’t try to buy that as well.

5:35pm Central time: I just received emails for the two forums I do subscribe to by email. ^

Not that the email is all that useful, since I've already read those threads long ago. :p

Got one at 5:34pm central for the MR Deals forum. First time I've ever gotten one.

Yawn :( - after such a long time without these problems being solved I have lost interest and read the much less pretentious PPrune.

IBobi Mar 28, 2012 4:51 pm

As you may have surmised, tech has made some changes.

You might be getting some email alerts, but they're the result of testing rather than necessarily a solution to the ongoing issue; this remains to be seen.

I'll keep you posted on what tech says about this attempt to fix.

For a year or two I get about 5% of email advices.
.

IBobi Apr 3, 2012 6:45 pm

How annoying would it be to keep getting multiple emails per day for several days?

I ask because that may be the only way we can troubleshoot this.

Would that be similar to the day that I got 900 emails from FT? :D Or would I expect less than 900? ;)

fwiw, I DID get the forum update for the one forum I've subscribed to updates from.

IBobi Apr 3, 2012 6:55 pm

Yeah, I assume everyone did -- it was another manual push-out while testing today.

As to the volume, I'm not sure.

SFO 1K Apr 3, 2012 8:22 pm

I'm willing for two or three days to get as many as you need to send to test out a fix.

stimpy Apr 4, 2012 2:14 am

I can hit the delete button repetitively without too much pain. Go ahead.

Also within Gmail you can hit shift-3 to delete all the emails in a thread. So not too difficult at all.

77kanata Apr 4, 2012 7:30 am

Received 4:03 emails to subscribed threads this am . Thank you! Hope they keep coming........

Better than getting no emails for several years :-)

A single copy of each forum waiting in my email at 5 AM this morning!

Hmmm... I'm wondering if they're going to your spam? Is your email address updated in the system, i.e. you're getting other FT emails?

SFO 1K Apr 6, 2012 12:20 pm

Not going to my Junk folder (I am using an iCloud account from Apple).
I do get thread updates like this one where I received notice of your message, but no nightly thread updates.

I could unsubscribe and resubscribe to the handful that I was monitoring, if that would be helpful?

stimpy Apr 8, 2012 4:36 am

Well it seems to be working ok. However I wonder if there is a way for us to select when we want to receive these forum updates? I'm getting them just after noon CET while I would prefer they arrive early in the morning.

I think it would be better on the servers if they didn't try to send to everyone at the same time, eh? If we all customized, or used our setting for timezone, it would be easier to manage I think.

Discus Apr 8, 2012 5:44 am

Looks like things are working for me (at the moment)

Don't ask them to twist anything now...

SFO 1K Apr 8, 2012 6:56 am

After resubscribing to my preferred threads I am getting my updates

stimpy Apr 22, 2012 2:58 pm

Forum updates stopped working for me a couple days ago it seems. Anyone else?
