I can't stand BBs that require you to sign up just to read the information. Unless I'm desperate, I never sign up. Who knows what I'm missing. That's definitely not the way to get members.
I don't really see a problem with having a high number or guests. Many of them are probably FT members who just aren't logged in for one reason or another. Others are just people browsing who probably aren't interested and won't come back. And still others are interested lurkers who don't want to post. If they don't want to post (which is pretty quick and painless), then what's the benefit of getting them to register?

Would it be more trouble than it's worth to offer a premium level FT?
Nobody is blocked from viewing anything, nor from posting - but pop-ups and IPOD ads appear only in non-premium FT. Would that be a way to improve performance, if that is what the OP is targeting?
