Are these notices of any useful purpose. I find them only a distraction, space taker, and of no real meaning to the message.
In fact, I think they lessen the impact of the message.

Are they mandatory?

can you give me an idea of what you consider "notices"? I'd like to reply but simply don't actually know what you are referrring to. Thanks for any help on this....

I think he's referring to the EDITING notices which are added to the bottom of posts once they are, well, editted. Now, is that two t's or one....

thanks for the clarification. As far as i know, that is built deep in the code of the board. While something we could look at, let me get together with the guys and gals here to discuss. First time it's come up so i'm not sure what to think. Thanks for the note and inquiry....

I find that there are many instances where it is extremely useful to know that a post has been edited.

Not quite so. I first posted the following as a new topic under Suggestions about six months ago. I brought it up again about two weeks ago.

In your next FlyerTalk revision I feel it would be very helpful to reduce the size, both in verbage and in point/font size, of the "...edited by..." example above.

For example, I would suggest

and reducing the point/font size by 50%.

I saw the smaller size on another board and it was unobtrusive yet just as effective as the existing one.

It would also be a big help if when we went back in for subsequent edits, it would overwrite the existing "Edited by..." line. We now have to cause this effect manually by deleting that line each time. Not everyone is aware this is even possible and at times some threads end up with many "...edited by..." lines. See example below, please.

The ability to edit the Topic headline also makes sense to me. We all make mistakes.

Since I'm not perfect, I have the urge to edit often and subsequently much space and bandwidth are unnecessarily wasted in its current format.

Perhaps, the same size and line as the "IP: Logged" at the bottom of each post. By being placed on the same line toward the left, and the wording shortened to [Edited by MRLIMO 01.01.2525], it would take no additional lines or line spacing!

My hats off to you for the thorough coverage of EDITED .........

I would opt for the word "Edited" only as a notice the message has changed. Funny, only yourselve and I find it a nuisance!

I agree with Punki too. The edited line indicates 1) the very fact that there has been a change in the post's content, 2) the date it occured, 3) who did the editing.

1) Haven't you ever seen anyone do the bait-and-switch? The person posts something incorrect at first, then someone replies pointing out the error, then original poster goes back, edits original post and turns around and flames the person who replied. Granted, this is an extreme example, but it has happened on this board.

2) The date reveals the time context. The date of editing vs the date of the original post vs the date of the followup replies.

3) You can see whether it was the poster him/herself who did the editing or if it was an admin/moderator.

Many people, as a matter of style, courtesy, or whatever other reason also add an explanation of why they edited their post.
