Question hotel near ATL: Sheraton or Westin?

I am planning a trip to Atlanta but can't decide which SPG hotel to choose near the airport. The price difference between Sheraton and Westin is small. I would like to get your advice on which one is the better hotel and in which one I will have a better chance for upgrade as a gold member. Thanks.

I spent this past Christmas night at the Westin ATL. As airport hotels go, I would recommend it. As a Gold, I was given a nice room on the top floor and the front desk agent made a point to remind me that yes, the lounge was indeed open on Christmas night.

Shuttles were plentiful - didn't have to wait more than about 3 minutes going either direction. Ride to the airport is about 5 minutes.

If you have an option to stay downtown, well, I'd always take anything over a dreary airport hotel. But if you gotta stay right by ATL, this is about as pleasant as an airport hotel can be.

ATL Airport Westin vs. Sheraton Gateway?

Plat, staying one night on points in December...arrive 8pm, depart 11am.
Both are 4K pts, Cat. 2, and have similar OK-to-Negative reviews, both here and on TripAdvisor (#76 vs. #80)
Is there any difference at all?

Which would you choose, based on the following:
1) Plat Upgrade--what do you usually get? Club Access/suite/nothing?
2) Gym
3) Nice bed

I'm leaning toward the Westin because of the Heavenly Bed, but am open to suggestions.
Thanks!

Avoid the Westin! Don't ask, just avoid it!

There are many threads on FT about both properties (hint, hint)

Here are several threads that compare both properties.

And because the world is full of opinions.....

I much prefer the Westin over the Sheraton. I just stayed at the Westin two weeks ago. Neither property is particularly attractive. I've stayed at the Westin ten or so times in the last couple years. The club lounge is being renovated. The rooms are just OK. You need to call in advance if there are Platinum expectations such as room upgrades. I've always been offered a suite, and have always been put on the club floor.

I did do a search.... but the most recent thread you cite is.... 3+years old.... so maybe I should add the word "recent" to my request?
Thanks for your help--and why "don't ask" about the Westin?

We'll as the mods have said, just update and existing thread instead of starting a new one, right? According to ldsant, we've been asked 1002 times to post in existing threads. Posting a new thread and adding to an existing thread do the same thing, right? LOL

I found the westin airport to be extremely nasty and unsanitary.

Quite honestly probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed at ...it was a comedy of errors. Staff, for the most part, is the worst I've ever encountered ..and this was a fairly recent stay (a couple of months ago). Only upside was that when I documented everything that went so very wrong, I ended up with a nice points credit to my account.

I jsut stayed at the Westin ATL twice in the last week. Overall the hotel is decent. I was upgraded both times to a JR suite. The club is closed, one time I was given a breakfast coupon. It shows a little wear here and thier, but nothing that was a big deal.

the westin at atlanta airport is dirty, disgusting and the staff could care less. i had feces in the toilet, a non-working shower with bugs in it, a valet who pointed me to parking that almost got my car towed and a manager who avoided me.

Did we have the same room?

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. My BFF was assigned a room next door, and he had bugs and water/mold smell issues.

That why I said don't ask, just avoid it.
