It expires at the end of every year in my experience. And you need to call up and have it reupped. Its been pretty easy and usually dealt with in a phone call.

Not sure where this would go--but AFAIK, if you get AAA Plus for your car, it also includes "SPG Preferred" level--between base and Gold, where you do get the SPG Floor rooms at check-in. Decent if you're getting the AAA Plus anyway, which does have some good perks for towing, etc.

My other question:
Once I qualify for Gold or Platinum Status, how long will it take for me to be either in their computer system, OR for me to recieve the Welcome Packet?

I believe that the status change takes place immediately upon the posting of your qualifying stay/night. (But I am not certain of this, and there might be a short delay.) I think that the welcome packets are not sent with perfect regularity. (But I am not certain of this either. Sorry, I'm only of limited help here.)

However, it's important to remember that your new status may not be recognized by the hotel for any reservations that you made prior to your qualification. In such cases, it's worth calling SPG and/or the hotel to make sure that they refresh your reservations to notify the hotel in advance about your new status. Otherwise, I would consider it luck of the draw of you trying to inform the front desk agent when you check in. And if you're visiting a hotel that pre-blocks upgrades earlier in the day (or prior), then you may miss out.

Also see Starwood Lurker's comments on this topic.

Indeed! I had totally forgotten about this. Here's a link with more info...
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/aaa

It sounds to me as if even basic AAA members are eligible. AAA members can call SPG to have them add this to their profile over the phone. Offer does not appear to be valid in all countries, and this limitation is vague about whether European and Canadian accounts are eligible.

"Already a Starwood Preferred Guest?
Select your phone number by country and mention code XB to upgrade your account."

"US 1-866-782-7737
Australia 1-800-816-942
Mention enrollment code SYC&S to upgrade your account."

Q: What other member partnerships provide Preferred Plus or Gold status?
1. American Dental Association (ADA) -- Preferred Plus. (Dentists in the U.S. and abroad and U.S. dental students can be eligible for ADA membership.)
2. American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) -- Preferred Plus. (Must be 50 yrs or older to join AARP.)
3. TD Ameritrade customers -- I'm not certain if this is an ongoing offer. I don't have an official link. Reports have been made of getting Preferred Plus and Gold.
4. SPG Amex cardholders -- Preferred Plus. Spend $30K+ in a calendar year to get Gold.
(Additions can be sent to me by PM. Please include an official link to the offer.)

Q: If I meet more than one of the above qualifications for Preferred Plus, can I stack them to get Gold?
A: Maybe. Some Preferred Plus members have reported that they have been upgraded to Gold when they call for a status upgrade based on an additional program's offer.

Do you get gold status as soon as you spend $30,000 on SPG Amex or do they wait until the end of the year?

From the AmEx website:
If during any calendar year, Eligible Spending on your Card account is $30,000 or more, you (the Basic Cardmember) will be enrolled for at least twelve months in the Gold Preferred level of the Starwood Preferred Guest® loyalty program (unless you are already enrolled in an equivalent or higher level). Please allow 12–16 weeks after your Eligible Spending equals or exceeds such amount for the applicable year for enrollment to become effective. If Eligible Spending on your Card account is $30,000 or more in calendar year 2006, your Gold Preferred Guest® status within the Starwood Preferred Guest program will become effective on or about March 1, 2007.
Unfortunately, that last sentence probably doesn't give you a lot of confidence in the bold one.

**I'm not sure if this is for as long as you keep the Direct Deposit or for one program year from the start**.
From my personal experience, this statement is somewhat incorrect. I had a DL Plat. Amex and was given SPG Gold w/o holding a DL status at the time. Cancelled the Direct Deposit the day after I got the SPG packet in the mail, Gold status was not and has not been affected either. Will maintain it the hard way though. YMMV.

Cheers,

A: Yes. Even stays booked on a casino rate are qualified stays. Comped rooms are NOT qualifying stays, though.

FWIW, When I booked online and later had my room comped, it was counted as a stay, but no nights were awarded. This may or may not be the intended behavior.

Do you get stay credit if you reserve the room (award or cash) on behalf of non-elite friends? Will they get upgraded? Will your account receive the 500 points PL amenities?

The official answer is "no". However, reality is probably YMMV.

Well, I can now confirm that it was about 6 weeks after I made Gold, and then Plat, that I received my cards.

I read through this thread and unless I missed it, I didn't see a definitive answer to this one: When does my Gold Status expire? Is it at the end of 2007 or 05/14/08 (I achieved Gold 05/15/07)?

If I stayed the requisite 10 times between the date I made Gold and expiration date, do I rollover to another Gold status for one more year?

You will be gold the remaining part of 2007, all of 2008 and the first two months of 2009.

4B.5. The qualifying period for Gold Preferred Guest membership ("Gold Membership") is from January 1st through December 31st of each year. Gold Membership status will commence when a Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement in any calendar year and will continue through the remainder of the qualifying year and the next succeeding calendar year. If, in the next succeeding calendar year, the Member again meets the Gold Minimum Requirement, then, the Gold Member will receive a 12-month renewal of their Gold Membership. If the Member does not meet the Gold Minimum Requirement in any subsequent year, the Member will be downgraded to the Preferred Guest level at the end of such calendar year. [For example, if the Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement in April 2006, the Member will become a Gold Member for the balance of 2006 and for 2007. If the Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement during 2007, the Member will retain Gold Membership during 2008; if the Member does not meet the Gold Minimum Requirement during 2007, the Member will be downgraded to the Preferred Guest level for 2008.]

If I keep flip-flopping every night, I'm likely to achieve the extra 15 stays to make Plat by the end of June 2007 (in addition to the 10 stays it took to make Gold). Once I hit that 25th stay, am I turning Plat? If so, I'll be Plat for the rest of 2007, all of 2008 and some months in 2009? Am I processing this right in my head?
