Can't get my AMEX referral bonus number???
A few weeks ago, we received the promo mailer offering a 5000 point bonus for referring up to 4 people for starwood amex cards. Somehow, we misplaced the tear off cards with the reference numbers.
I put in a call to AMEX to get our numbers-- and, on the first call, the agent gave me a ten digit code. Unfortunately, the code was invalid. When I called back, I was eventually told that there is no way to get the numbers. How can that be? If the numbers are tied to our account (and they would have to be in order to credit the account properly)-- how can it be "impossible" to tell us the numbers???
Has anyone successfully had the numbers told to them either by phone or email? If so, who did you contact?

I've had good success with Amex by logging into my Amex account, then sending them an email through the secure message center. They've always responded within 24hrs, and have been more than fair in my dealings with them as far as getting points applied instantly, missing credits, etc....
Or pick up the phone and keep calling Amex till you get a CSR that can do what you want.
If all else fails, I can give you a unique ID to use on the applications. (mine

One other Flyertalker contacted me about this as well, and I've been looking into it on their behalf. This was American Express' response to that member:
"Unfortunately, American Express is unable to recover the unique ID associated with your account in this campaign at this time as this campaign was run in November of 2006. However, American Express will be running additional promotions in the near future so please continue to watch your mailbox for other special offers from the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express."
So, it looks like asking SPG to intervene is going to be a non-starter.

Thanks for checking, but I am confused by the idea of it being a "November 2006" promotion--The promotion doesn't end until January 22, 2007. It seems technically impossible for AMEX to credit my account using the reference number while simultanously claiming that they do no have the reference number.........

I have had the exact same experience. Called AMEX and they claim it is a "unique" code so I am totally out of luck. Very poor customer service where this is concerned.
