NEW Policy? Mid-Year Category Changes?

Was attempting to book the Four Points By Sheraton Las Vegas East a few days ago, and it was listed as a category 2 hotel for 4000 SPG points.

Today I go and check again, and now it's coming up as a category 3.

I thought Category changes are ONLY done once a year in March?

Has the policy changed?

Why Was this changed around sept 22-24th?

What if other hotels just randomly change category overnight?

Has this changed due to Marriott Policies Now being implemented?

Your thoughts?

Under "hotel information" says category 2.

Now on SPG.Com lists as CAT 3

Trip Advisor review (1 week ago) stating 4000 points

I would concur, for 4000 points, its the best deal in vegas. For 7000, there are better options in vegas.

While the bulk of hotels change categories in March, it is not unheard of when a hotel changes category mid-year without notice (in most such cases, going up 1 or even 2 categories).

I had suspected that something like this may have been happening.

I was attempting to book the Sheraton Wall Center Vancouver and was surprised to discover it was a Category 5. I was pretty sure it was still at Category 4 at the last change...

It wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. I did a little research to see if I was right but gave up looking.

Iirc, category change at any property can be done at anytime deemed necessary (by hotel or spg) without prior notice.

Same w/ Marriott. The majority of the changes are done annually, but occasionally you find a property that did a mid or late year change w/ no notice. If someone has booked prior to the category change, Marriott honors the earlier category reservation in terms of points. I'm assuming SPG handles their changes the same.

Cheers.

Is it just 4P Las Vegas? Or has anybody spotted another hotel doing the same thing?

Short - Yes, it happens, and no, it's not new or due to Marriott.

This same question pops up every year. There seem to be a single-digit number of off-cycle changes every year.
KENNECTED and Srisarin like this.

Perhaps they are piloting a dynamic pricing model, whereby the property rating varies by load/projected load and search activity.

You heard it here first!
